A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

American tourist dies drowned on Zipolite beach

American tourist dies drowned on Zipolite beach

OAXACA DE JUÁREZ.- A  man  of  American  origin  drowned this Wednesday afternoon in the sea in front of  Zipolite beach  , in the municipality of San Pedro Pochutla, in the Oaxaca Coast region.

The State Coordination of Civil Protection (Cepco) confirmed the death.

According to the report, it indicated that municipal lifeguards took tourists out of the water;  They also applied  first aid  , but by the time he was submerged, he  no longer had vital signs  .

They identified him as  Ricardo M., 49  , originally from Los Angeles, California, who visited this beach destination, and  decided to swim in the open sea  , despite warnings from lifeguards and tourist police not to enter dangerous areas.

Minutes after that, he was taken to the shore by rescuers, who gave him first aid, however, they were unable to save him.

The place was cordoned off by the security corporations, where personnel from the Oaxaca General Prosecutor's Office arrived and carried out the corresponding investigations.

Tourists ignore warnings

During 2019 and 2020, this beach reported a white balance, despite the fact that almost all the time the red flags warn of the danger of the sea.

According to local lifeguards, tourists almost always ignore these warnings.

For this reason, in addition to being known as the only beach that officially tolerates nudism , Zipolite is known as " the beach of the dead ." Prior to these last two years, drownings were very common, due to the strong currents of the open sea that bathe this beach.
