Seven dead from rough seas in Oaxaca; search continues for missing tourist in Zipolite
The State Coordination of Civil Protection and Risk Management (CEPCyGR) of Oaxaca reported that, so far this year, seven people have lost their lives on the state's coast due to the swell phenomenon. Among the victims are two foreign tourists, one Canadian and one American, who were swept away by the strong waves at Zicatela Beach, Puerto Escondido. Despite lifeguard warnings, both entered the sea and disappeared; the body of the Canadian citizen was later located, while that of the American has not yet been found.
Additionally, Amaury Yasser Shazan Reyes, 35, originally from the State of Mexico, was reported missing. He was swept away by rip currents at Playa del Amor, near Zipolite. According to authorities, the tourist ignored warnings not to enter the ocean due to dangerous conditions caused by the swell. The search continues with the participation of local lifeguards, rescue teams from San Agustinillo and Mazunte, and response units with jet skis.
State Civil Protection maintains coordination with municipal authorities and emergency teams, providing logistical support and ongoing monitoring of the operation deployed in the area. The CEPCyGR reiterated its call to the public and visitors to follow the instructions of lifeguards and avoid swimming in areas with strong currents or areas marked as dangerous.
The swell phenomenon is characterized by high waves and strong currents that can be dangerous for swimmers. Authorities urge citizens to stay informed about sea conditions and follow safety recommendations to prevent further tragedies on Oaxaca's beaches.
