Shark presence alarmed tourists and residents on Oaxaca beach
INFOBAE
This week, a pair of sharks surprised fishermen and tourists, as the animals came closer than usual to the shore of Mermejita beach, in Mazunte, belonging to the jurisdiction of Santa María Tonameca, Oaxaca.
A video broadcast on social networks shows a pair of sharks swimming very close to the beach, an unusual behavior in this type of animal, which does not usually come so close to the coast. Before the Easter holidays and the arrival of tourists, the inhabitants of the coast requested the intervention of authorities.
Although there is no record of shark attacks on the semi-virgin beach, the residents preferred to call the authorities to prevent visitors from swimming and an accident occurring.
Fabiola Méndez Avalos, director of Tourism of Tonameca, commented in an interview with Excelsior that the sighting of sharks this season is due to the presence of sardines, the favorite food of sharks, that is why they do not attack humans because they are hungry, but because they mistake them for their prey.
“Through the lifeguards it is recommended not to enter that virgin beach, so as not to attract their attention; finally, they are in their habitat (the sharks), and humans are the intruders, ”he said.
Mazunte is a small town on the Pacific coast in Oaxaca that in 2015 was declared by the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) "Magic Town". It is worth mentioning that it is considered this way because it has the following characteristics:
- Preserves symbolic attributes and beautiful architecture.
- He is the protagonist of momentous events and legends.
- Very old town for its history and culture.
- An intact daily life.
- Its inhabitants maintain their customs and traditions.
Mazunte is known for having turtle conservation sanctuaries, in addition to being requested, along with more beaches in Oaxaca, by surfers for its great waves.
Another of the beaches of this entity that in recent months has unleashed controversy is Zipolite, a beach that, due to its climate, vegetation, fauna and culinary variety, is famous for having a nudist area.
The undersecretary of health, Hugo López Gatell, has been harshly criticized on social networks just for going on vacation to said paradisiacal beach, after asking daily for the support of Mexicans to not leave home and avoid COVID-19 infections .
The undersecretary tweeted this message from his account to alert the population about the risk involved in going out on these dates, due to the health contingency that urges the Mexican Republic, but the majority of responses he received were messages of anger.
"It's easy to say when you've already gone on vacation, Mexicans who have been locked up for a year just going out to buy basic products are fed up because you are not able to give clear recommendations and a good example of responsibility and consistency," said an Internet user.
In this sense, some pointed out that he did not have the authority to ask them to stay at home, when in December he went on a trip to Oaxaca and was recently caught in a public area of Mexico City, even though he had mentioned that it was positive in the detection test for the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
“With all due respect, you have been the worst example. He has no moral authority to ask for what he has not done. Pochutla and Zipolite in December and recently with everything and COVID in the Countess ... what can I say. I have been more responsible than you, I just tell you that and I am not anti-love ", replied another user.
