A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Although Cancun, in Quintana Roo, and Los Cabos, in Baja California Sur, are the  most important  beach destinations  in Mexico, and therefore the most expensive, there are other little corners of sand, sun and sea, just as beautiful but much  more. economic  for these times of economic and health crisis.

Of course, first we must make it clear that these places  do not have the same resort offer  as those already mentioned, but in return you will find a  more peaceful, bohemian and even ecotourism environment.

We present you  four paradisiacal and cheap beaches  that you should know on your next  vacation.

Without a doubt, the beaches of this beautiful state are a guarantee, due to its crystal clear waters, its intense waves for surfers and foreign visitors, especially from Europe.

Zipolite  is known as a nudist beach, but it is not a requirement to enjoy it either;  even, far from what many may think, it  is very familiar.

Unlike Zicatela, Mazunte, Puerto Escondido or Huatulco, here is a great option for  camping on the beach  if you don't want to invest in a hotel, which also has all the prices and amenities.  And it is that for  150-200 pesos a night  , you can install your house;  In addition, with that rate you have the right to use  clean showers and bathrooms  , as well as Wi-Fi.

As for food, in the area there are from fonditas to restaurants and bars, as well as snack stalls.

Yelapa, Jalisco

The beaches of the  Cabo Corrientes  municipality  are one of the best kept secrets in the state.  Among its jungle is  Yelapa  , a refuge for writers and artists who visit it every year to disconnect and be inspired.

To get to this corner, the best alternative is to take the  water taxis  docked at Playa los Muertos or from Boca de Tomatlán.  In this small town you can stay in their  palapa cabins  with all services, from  600 pesos a night  ;  either or in tents, on the beach.

In its waters there are numerous green and blue, clear and clean, perfect for  snorkeling  and learning about its marine fauna.  But there are also activities for the more adventurous, who can enter the tropical jungle and take a route to  bathe in the waterfalls  that break through the abundant vegetation, such as “La Catedral”, and “La Cascada”.  The journey lasts about four hours, round trip, and on the way you can come across parrots, iguanas, badgers, and other species.

In its restaurants you can taste a huge fried mojarra, with rice and salad for less than 200 pesos.  As if that were not enough, other jewels are located nearby, such as  Majahuitas beach and Colomitos beach  , the smallest in the country.

Maruata, Michoacan

If you go a little  deeper  into the rural area of the  Michoacan coast, you will  discover this beautiful,  almost uninhabited  beach  , perfect for those who are willing to leave luxuries behind.  Therefore, Cofepris classified it as  one of the cleanest in the country.

The most common is to take your tent and camp freely by the turquoise sea, but there are also some cabin options for those who prefer more comfort, ranging from  500 pesos to night.

Among its attractions is  "The finger of God"  , a rock formation that seems to point towards the sky, as well as several  natural hot tubs  that form behind the cliffs and the sanctuary of the black turtle.  In addition, due to its strong waves, it becomes a great place to practice surfing.

The restaurants are rustic palapas to taste from grilled fish or freshly caught lobster.  Another memorable dish is morisqueta, with rice and fish stuffed with molcajete sauce.  All at a fairly affordable price.

Mahahual, Quintana Roo

A clear example that not all the beauty of the  Riviera Maya  is expensive.  This small rustic fishing village has become popular in recent years for its  semi-virgin beaches  , away from springbreakers and street vendors.

A few meters from its soft white sand, there are cabins for rent with  spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea  .  There are from the simple ones of  1000 pesos for three nights  , to those for six people, many of them surrounded by beautiful gardens.  In its common areas you will find hammocks to relax among the palm trees.

Here is located the  Banco Chinchorro  , considered the largest coral reef in Latin America.  In addition, it is worth spending an hour to visit the  archaeological site of Chacchobén.

We recommend you rent a bicycle to travel the boardwalk and feel the sea breeze;  snorkeling or diving in its crystal clear waters;  visit the  lagoon of the seven colors in Bacalar  ;  and try craft beer and cazon bread in one of its restaurants.
