A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Huatulco International Airport – Expansion Update

Progress is definitely showing at the Huatulco International airport, where the $26 million dollar expansion project consists of widening and lengthening the runway to receive flights from Europe and expanding the terminal to double the amount of check-in desks.  Once complete the expanded airport will have a capacity to carry out 22 operations per hour.

Check out some updated pictures of the project as well as some renderings of the soon to be finished product.

Hello, checate vivaerobus prices can sometimes find in 750 easy to Huatulco or Puerto Escondido and from there take a truck 40 to Pochutla checado vivaeroubus now I have so little time but would be worth, considered to be more or least 10 hours driving (for acapulco because Oaxaca is crazy) and that takes away almost two days.
I will be over there, see if we put together something.

That such a band,
all I want to discourage a visit to such a beautiful place, but it will have about 15 days to return vdd Mazunte and I have really wanted to go back, but still do not think is very viable q go by car, by the available days perhaps maybe take turns driving and yet I find it a little heavy, I went to Oaxaca and made almost 12 hours for warrior saves you much, maybe a couple of hours but you pay more for houses and gasoline. A Mazunte, zipo, San Agustinillo, safe return in late January, in case anyone wants to go we go in my car and save on costs ... but this bridge ire to somewhere closer, if anyone can recommend a beach Tecolutla, Emerald Coast and budget accommodation is the much grateful. (with phone to book if you can) If you persist in wanting to go to them zipo q I recommend going to a beach near q is called Angel pto Ixtaca Huite, very nice, like pool, no waves, for snorkeling and spend a very comfortable. "What you give what you give, what you do not give it off. . Playa Zipolite

6 kilometres (4 miles) west of Puerto Angel is Playa Zipolite
(see-poh-LEE-tay), a beach community
best known for its amazing waves and ‘hippie’ culture.
Zipolite is a nearly pristine beach about
forty meters wide and 2km long, with medium grain gold
 colored sand and blue-green water.

This beach was featured in the Mexican blockbuster movie
Y tu mamá también.” and has become
very popular with foreign tourists and backpackers.  Zipolite
is also popular for it’s nudity, mostly
on the west end, so be warned that you may get an eyeful if
you go!  Zipolite stretches from a small
isolate cove called Playa del Amor on the east side to the
new age Shambala retreat on the west
end which is partially sheltered by rocks.  The beach is lined
by swaying palms, rustic cabanas, hotels,
 restaurants and hammocks.
Because of the underwater currents residing offshore it is
best to use caution when swimming.  A volunteer lifeguard
 team and flag
system have been created to indicate where and when it is
safest to swim.  Only the strongest swimmers and most skilled
 surfers and
body boarders head out into deeper waters. Most stay shallow
or simply enjoy the mesmerizing waves of Zipolite.
Main street in Zipolite
Walk along the main paved street (Aldoquin as the locals call it)
where you can shop for authentic Mexican trinkets and clothing,
or enjoy one of the many great restaurants offering standard
Mexican to international cuisine, authentic Italian and vegetarian
choices. Many of the local restaurants are owned by expatriate
Italians and serve pasta dishes as well as pizza.  Enjoy tasty meals
all for 1/4 to 1/2 the price you would pay back home – you can’t
beat that! Although there are many beachside restaurants to
choose from, we have a few favorites that we’d like to share with you.
El Alquimista Restaurant
El Alquimista restaurant is located on the west end of the beach
and offers delicious wood fired pizzas, tasty tuna medallions,
thirst quenching mango margaritas and the famous Mixta
Grill for 2 people – a delicious fare of grilled chicken, ribs,
steak and sausage.  It is sure to tantalize your tastebuds!
El Alquimista provides great food and a relaxing atmosphere…all
for half the price you would pay at home.  We like to spend the
entire day at El Alquimista, taking advantage of their
relaxing spa and partaking in a yoga class in their newly built studio.
Another mealtime favorite is La Providencia, located on the
 second street perpendicular to the
main
entrance of Zipolite.  This amazing restaurant offers one of
 the best contemporary Mexico
cuisine in the area.  Paco and Javier never cease to amaze
 us with their hospitality, amazing
service and tasty fare. Specialties include delicious coconut
shrimp in mango sauce, fresh tuna,
beef medallions & stuffed chillies – Buen Provecho!
Break the fast at ‘A Nice Place on the Beach’,
owned by Greg, a fellow Canadian and lover
of the area. This place is a great
spot to visit in the morning and enjoy the
famous ‘Canadian Breakfast’ while watching
the massive Zipolite surf roll in. After
breakfast relax in a hammock or walk the
shoreline of this famous beach. This little
gem is located off main street Zipolite.
Check out their Facebook page here.
We searched high & low for our favorite pizza place…and
finally found it at Posada Mexico.  Located on the main street
in Zipolite, Posada Mexico has a great relaxing and romantic
vibe.  The Italian chefs do justice to their country’s cuisine with
their delicious thin crust brick-oven pizza that will revive your
tastebuds.  Enjoy 2-for-1 cocktails and great food while listening
to the waves roll in.  Enjoy!

Relax on the beach, check out the shops at the Aldoquin, enjoy
a spa day or participate in a yoga class at one of the 2 local
studios.  Zipolite provides something for everyone and is as
relaxing as it gets along the Oaxacan coastline.  On occasion,
Zipolite has some nightlife; Barracuda bar, Livelula, and Babel
Cafe all have live music from time to time where you can.
Musical genres include, blues, jazz, funk, reggae as well as DJ’s
liven up the relaxing vibe and allow travelers to let loose
and dance the night away.  Zipolite will also get bands trickle in
from the Puerto Escondido Music Festival.  One fan favorite
is the Dave Rotundo band from Toronto – they will definitely get
your feet tapping and hands clapping! Here’s a video of the
band performing one of their originals.  Enjoy!
