This phenomenon, linked to the terrestrial cycles, was. intimately related to the cult of fertility.

Entre las culturas mesoamericanas el temazcal tuvo una función ritual y un significado cosmológico. Su ubicación junto a juegos de pelota indica que sus funciones sagradas estuvieron ligadas con el ritual del juego. El temazcal representaba el interior de la Tierra y era un lugar de tránsito entre el mundo de los vivos y el inframundo. Se le concebía como la entrada al "más allá". La ubicación de algunos ejemplares arqueológicos al poniente del juego de pelota quizá represente el punto en que cuerpos celestes como Venus, el Sol y la Luna descendían hacia la región subterránea, viajando por el inframundo -simbolizado por el juego de pelota-, para aparecer nuevamente por el oriente. Este fenómeno, ligado a los ciclos terrestres, estaba. íntimamente relacionado con el culto a la fertilidad.
