A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

What to do on the nudist beach of Zipolite, Oaxaca?

These are some activities you can do in Zipolite in times of Covid-19

Zipolite  is the nudist paradise of  Oaxaca , where you can enjoy the sea and sand without taboo. Here, foreign and national tourists lie down to sunbathe without clothes, as it is the only  official nudist beach  in Mexico.

We share a guide of unmissable activities that you can do in this destination, because not everything is being naked on the beach.

Surf lessons

Zipolite is one of Oaxaca's favorite beaches for surfing. Its waves are ideal for those who like strong emotions. If you are a beginner in this sport, on the beach you will find classes that can be all day long at a cost of approximately 400 pesos, with board rental included.

Shambhala meditation

This beach also offers its visitors a peaceful environment, perfect for mindfulness and eliminating the stress caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. In a small place called Shambhala, people have spiritual encounters, through meditation and yoga practice in an environment that allows contact with nature.

This ceremonial center, located on the top of a Zipolite hill, organizes activities with healers and experts in emotional healing.

Visit nearby beaches

If your stay is several days in Zipolite, you can take a small tour to see the neighboring beaches, such as Mazunte. There you can visit the Mexican Turtle Center, if you are lucky you can help with the release of some specimens of this species. Or you can also visit La Boquilla, an intimate beach where you can snorkel or kayak.

Sanitary measures in Zipolite

Although the beaches of the municipality of Pochutla, where Zipolite belongs, will be open to the public, it is important that you know that sanitary measures against the  Covid-19 , such as the use of face masks, since three brigades of three teams from the municipality will be visiting both this tourist destination and Puerto Ángel.

Hotel occupancy must be 50%, restaurants 40%, while bars and canteens will only have take away service.

According to Diego Ordoñez Ventura, coordinator of supervisors for Health of the municipality, the campaigns that were already carried out in the center of Pochutla and businesses will now be carried out on the most visited beaches, especially from March 29 to April 3, which corresponds to Easter.

“I invite you, a tourist friend, that if you go to our municipality you take the corresponding sanitary measures (...) We ask you to support us and not to disrespect us. Support us, we are going to mitigate the pandemic ”.

In the end you always go back to the People that were there in the Beginning... (A surf board I spotted at a surf camp in the Philippians. :) Ivan)

Zipolite used to be

Robert Delirio Temple

Zipolite used to be such a nice place to live in, back in the early-mid 1980s. I see that it has been totally commercialized since, even after a fire that destoyed the village years ago. Most all the money came from other countries, or so I've read. Those investers brought their big-city problems with them, it appears. That people even refer to it as a nudist beach is sad, sort of takes from the casual attitude, this labeling. I have watched another place go from primativo esquina do mundo to "chic" in a matter of maybe twenty years or so, down in the state of Bahia, Brasil. Now, paradise resides between my ears.
Attached is a picture I took from the house I rented for a while the winter of 1985-6. Rent was $US 50 a month, no running water, showered at a bar/restaurant in the village. It was primativo, no "in" scenes or tour busses, internet cafes, coke or heroin. For me, it was a great place to be sober. I practiced juggling daily on the beach, or swam way out past the huge, man-eating waves, for hours on end, body surfing like a wild man.
I was not a "backpacker" following the gringo trail or looking for some spiritual, gay or nudist retreat or some "in" place to visit. I was actually in the Zipolite neighborhood on a recommendation from an old girlfriend who had lived in nearby Puerto Escondido one winter. She never knew of Zipolite, I found it thanks to a recommendation from another juggler I met, Rory McLeod of Scotland. Rory said P.E. was so touristy, said I would like Zipolite more. He was juggling and tap dancing in front of the Zocalo in Oaxaca city. He still performs today, a true troubadour. He blows incredible harmonica, too..
I was more into seeking out other jugglers or circuses, far from the uptight, hysterical amerikants back home. As it turned out, I did cameo juggling spots with a ragtag one-ringer, "Circo Orlins" in Puerto Angel, winter of 1984-5, my first of two concecutive winters there in Zipolite, Nov-March. Mexico loves circus, a good thing. Sad, though, that wild animals are still in the shows there. Some things change slowly. In the meanwhile, seize the moment.
