A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Zipolite Beach (Mexico)

Zipolite Beach (Mexico): strong underwater Pacific and small beach with silky white sand and turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean attracts many tourists. However, local residents prefer to avoid this place - especially during the period from April to June, when the water, as they say here, “riots”.  This riot is expressed by a strong undercurrent, including the reverse, which is difficult to notice from the shore. In addition, during the summer months, during the full moon, the ebbs and flows of extraterritorial waters usually occur, the strength of the flow of which is difficult to handle even for an adult. The danger is also enhanced by sea cliffs and cliffs that hide in the deep ocean.
Each year, the Mexican authorities spend decent amounts on organizing the work of rescuers, and indeed since 2007 no deaths have been recorded on the beach (although in 2010 180 people were officially saved who could not cope with the course, ignoring the red flags installed on the shore) .  By the way, the name of the beach and the bay - Zipolite - is very alarming in itself: in translation from the local Sapotek dialect, this means "shore of the dead." Nevertheless, the beach is known as one of the main summer goals of nudists and hippies from around the world: rest there is inexpensive, and the places are picturesque.

Three people die in Pochutla due to adulterated alcohol consumption NVI News That day, a 64-year-old male from Zipolite was also hospitalized , who died of direct intake of ethanol.

The intoxicated would have consumed cocol which is a preparation of coconut water, mezcal and red label alcohol.

The dry law derived from the pandemic by COVID-19, added Oaxaca to the entities with deaths from the consumption of drinks with ethyl alcohol. Five of the people would have consumed the substance in a craft drink and the other in a pure way.
Not having access to the alcoholic beverages of trademarks registered and authorized by the health authorities has led to the preparation and consumption of beverages that put health at risk.
The head of the 04 Costa Sanitary Jurisdiction, Yaneira Castellanos Nava, explained that the patients treated in this jurisdiction presented abdominal pain, shortness of breath, diaphoresis, that is, sweating, tachypnea or rapid breathing, five of them had in common having attended the same party on Sunday June 7 where they consumed a prepared drink called cocol.
According to what is reported by patients, cocol is a preparation made with coconut water, mezcal and red label alcohol, apparently cane alcohol for exclusive external use, not for consumption. "With all the symptoms they presented, we suspect ethanol poisoning."
On June 8, two people arrived at the General Hospital in Pochutla: a woman and a man, 40 and 48 years old, respectively, who presented the aforementioned signs. Both had attended a party where they consumed cocol. The two people arrived in serious condition and died on the morning of June 9.
The cause of death has yet to be confirmed through the autopsy of the law. The Deputy Prosecutor's Office took samples of gastric content which were sent to study.
On the same morning 9, another 33-year-old male person presented to the hospital with the same characteristics, in addition to loss of visual acuity. He had attended the same party. He was under observation and was discharged for improvement the same night. Hours later, two more arrived at the Pochutla health center with the same symptoms. Both were released on June 10.
That day, a 64-year-old male from Zipolite was also hospitalized, who died of direct intake of ethanol. The man had a history of chronic alcoholism. "This patient has no relationship with those who attended the party."
