A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Mexico Is Set to Boost Oaxacan Coast Tourism Through Seamless Domestic Travel Connectivity with a New Highway

Mexico is strengthening domestic travel connectivity along the Oaxacan coast through the Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway, a major infrastructure project linking Oaxaca City with Puerto Escondido. The 104.3-kilometre highway, inaugurated in February 2024, has reduced travel time from approximately 6.5 hours to 2.5–3 hours, creating new opportunities for coastal tourism, regional businesses and multi-destination holidays. Developed with an investment exceeding MXN 13 billion, the highway connects Oaxaca’s cultural heartland with its Pacific coastline, making Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, Zipolite and Bahías de Huatulco more accessible through the regional road network.

New Highway Transforms Oaxaca’s Domestic Tourism Connectivity

The Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway represents a major improvement in southern Mexico’s transport infrastructure. Stretching approximately 104.3 kilometres, the route includes 10 bridges, three viaducts, three tunnels and 15 interchanges, improving access through Oaxaca’s mountainous terrain. Previously, travellers faced lengthy journeys along winding roads between Oaxaca City and the Pacific coast. The new connection reduces travel time by approximately four hours, making weekend holidays and shorter coastal itineraries more practical. For Mexico’s domestic tourism industry, improved road access allows visitors to combine cultural attractions, gastronomy and beach experiences without depending entirely on domestic flights. The highway also strengthens regional connections for agricultural producers, transport operators and local businesses.

Oaxaca City: Cultural Tourism Creates a Gateway to Coastal Holidays

Oaxaca City is central to the highway’s tourism potential. Its UNESCO-listed historic centre, traditional markets, renowned cuisine and nearby Monte Albán archaeological site attract visitors interested in Mexican culture. The improved road connection allows travellers to spend several days exploring Oaxaca City before continuing towards the Pacific coast. Oaxaca welcomed approximately 6.29 million domestic and international tourists in 2025, generating around MXN 23.35 billion in tourism-related economic activity. The highway could encourage visitors to extend their holidays by combining inland cultural experiences with coastal destinations, supporting accommodation providers, restaurants, tour operators and transport businesses across multiple communities.

Puerto Escondido: Surfing Destination Gains Easier Access

Puerto Escondido stands among the principal beneficiaries of the improved highway. Known for Zicatela Beach, surfing, boutique accommodation and coastal gastronomy, the destination is now considerably more accessible to travellers arriving from Oaxaca City. However, easier transport has not automatically translated into stronger hotel demand. Puerto Escondido recorded average accommodation occupancy of approximately 41.52% during January–August 2025, indicating opportunities to attract longer stays. The destination could benefit from promoting surfing holidays, wellness experiences, regional cuisine and nature-based excursions. Improving local transport, environmental management and accommodation quality will be important as visitor accessibility increases. The highway’s commercial value will ultimately depend on whether additional travellers choose to stay overnight rather than make shorter coastal visits.

Mazunte and Zipolite: Smaller Coastal Communities Gain Tourism Opportunities

Mazunte and Zipolite offer alternatives to Oaxaca’s larger resort destinations. Mazunte attracts visitors interested in turtle conservation, coastal landscapes and wellness tourism, while Zipolite is known for its relaxed atmosphere and independent accommodation. Improved regional road connectivity could encourage travellers to include both destinations in extended coastal itineraries. For local guesthouses, restaurants and tour operators, additional visitors may generate employment and revenue. However, increased tourism also creates challenges involving waste management, water availability and coastal conservation. Protecting the environment will be essential to preserving the attractions that support these communities. Sustainable development and reliable local transport could help smaller coastal businesses benefit from improved access without compromising their distinctive character.

Bahías de Huatulco: Established Resorts Strengthen Regional Tourism Connections

Bahías de Huatulco provides an established resort destination within Oaxaca’s wider coastal tourism network. Its beaches, protected natural areas and organised accommodation infrastructure complement Puerto Escondido’s surfing-focused market. During January–August 2025, Huatulco recorded approximately 62.86% hotel occupancy, considerably higher than Puerto Escondido’s 41.52%. Improved regional connections could encourage travellers to combine Huatulco with Oaxaca City and smaller coastal communities, creating opportunities for extended holidays and additional spending. However, reaching Huatulco requires onward travel through the regional road network because the new highway does not directly connect every coastal destination.

Oaxaca’s Highway Creates Opportunities for Regional Tourism Growth

Tourism destinationPrincipal attractionConnectivity benefit

Puerto EscondidoSurfing and beachesShorter journey from Oaxaca City
MazunteEcotourism and turtle conservationEasier access through coastal connections
ZipoliteIndependent beach tourismGreater opportunities for extended stays
Bahías de HuatulcoResorts and coastal natureStronger regional touring opportunities

Mexico is set to boost Oaxacan coast tourism through seamless domestic travel connectivity with a new highway, cutting Oaxaca City–Puerto Escondido travel time from 6.5 to 3 hours and improving access to Pacific beach destinations.

Conclusion: Better Roads Could Support Oaxaca’s Next Tourism Expansion

In conclusion, Mexico’s Barranca Larga–Ventanilla highway is improving domestic travel connectivity between Oaxaca City and the Pacific coast, reducing journey times and making multi-destination holidays more accessible. With 6.29 million statewide tourist arrivals in 2025, Oaxaca has an established tourism market that could benefit from stronger connections between cultural and coastal attractions. However, the highway’s precise contribution to additional visitor arrivals has not yet been established. For the Oaxacan coast, the long-term opportunity lies in converting faster journeys into longer stays, greater local spending and sustainable tourism development across Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, Zipolite and neighbouring coastal communities.
