Oaxaca, Oax.- On the night of Friday, November 17, a strong thunderstorm was recorded that lasted 5 hours in the international tourist destination of Mazunte, belonging to the municipality of Santa María Tonameca, Costa region, which caused the Jazz Festival to be canceled. flooding in streets, homes and establishments, in addition to several motor vehicles being affected and the temporary crossing where the community bridge is being built collapsed.
The rain surprised not only the residents, but also the state authorities who had no record of any meteorological activity. The State Coordinator of Civil Protection of Oaxaca assured that it was an isolated event.
The storm caused the cancellation of the Jazz Festival, which is attended by hundreds of tourists every year, who have reservations for two to four nights. Community authorities expect the festival to resume today, at 5:00 p.m. earlier in case another storm occurs.
Due to the intense rain, the water level rose and several houses and establishments were flooded, in addition to the streets being invaded by dirt, causing damage to various motor vehicles.
Likewise, the vehicular passage from Zipolite to Mazunte was cut off, in the area known as Arroyo Bomba, and the provisional passage where the bridge is being built collapsed.
Citizens request support from the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) to reactivate the passage of vehicles from these two important tourist destinations in the Oaxaca Coast region.
After a damage assessment by the community authorities, machines and dumpers clean the main street and field, then they will continue with surrounding streets, they ask for support from the population to help with shovels and pickaxes.
Until now, it is unknown if the Government of Oaxaca has sent help to combat the damage.
