A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

The Southeast Indian and Southern Oceans, which are the breeding ground for swells that slam Southern Australia and Victoria are really starting to stir to life, with a couple of large and very intense storms forecast to develop off the coast of Western Australia.
This is good news for the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, which commences Tuesday, April 2nd, as a series of west-southwest swells will offer good-size surf through the first few days of the waiting period.

While these swells will not be coming from the best direction for Bells -- southwest to south-southwest swells are ideal -- they will be of sufficient size and longer period to be able to wrap into Victoria's surf coast and offer quality waves along with periods of good conditions next week.

The first pulses of west-southwest swell will arrive for the first two days of the waiting period, building in through the day Tuesday, strongest on Wednesday and then easing into Thursday with overhead surf during the peak of the swell.

A second, and potentially stronger, west-southwest swell is lining up for Friday the 6th, before fading through the following weekend, if forecast charts and models prove to be correct. While it's a long way out for a concrete wind forecast, especially for the Friday swell, there will very likely be periods of favorable wind throughout the first several days of the waiting period.

Going further out, the storm track south of Australia slows down as we move into the second week of April and southwesterly groundswells also thin out quite a bit. If nothing pops up in the next week or so, event organizers might be forced to go mobile. Stay tuned!
