My wife and a couple of friends recently twisted my arm and convinced me to take a day off to enjoy the natural wonders at hand on the Oaxaca coast.
So, car fully packed, we set on our way early in the morning to my favorite place, Agua Blanca. Having checked the tide report beforehand, we knew we had to get there before 10:00am to be able to enjoy the natural tidal pools along the beach in that beautiful spot.
The drive there was comfortable, we saw little traffic and the day was partly cloudy, which significantly reduced the heat. We found a tranquil and practically empty beach, the palapas ready and waiting for beachgoers.
We walked the beach and enjoyed the refreshing waters of the natural pools and the backdrop of big waves.
We then visited our favorite palapa restaurant, which offers a home-like menu of fresh fish and shrimp prepared in different styles and assorted seafood cocktails. Their beer is always very cold, and they also have a flavorful mezcalito.
We spent the time in tranquil contemplation of the sea and its waves which, as they crash upon the rocks at Agua Blanca, offer an ever-changing vista.
The place has grown little as the years have gone by, and despite the presence of a few buildings it remains a secluded beach. The dirt road has been improved and, finally, sign indicating the detour from the main Puerto Escondido-Huatulco highway has been installed. There’s no way to get lost now.
As work on that highway progresses, more four-lane sections are being opened, though the transition between two and four lanes is often sudden. Those of us who drive the road frequently know you have to be alert, but it could be dangerous to the unaware tourist, as the necessary signage hasn’t been installed.
After a meal of huachinango, or red snapper, in garlic, some guacamole and a couple of beers (and a caballito of mezcal), we returned to Puerto.
Once home after a calm drive back, we were greeted with the news of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán’s prison break. One news outlet interviewed an author who had published an interesting book in 2005 that detailed El Chapo’s talent in building wide, illuminated and reinforced tunnels below the Mexico-U.S. border, used by his drug cartel to smuggle drugs into our veino del norte.
The question here is, did penitentiary authorities really dismiss that as a possibility, given El Chapo’s fame, history and inexhaustible resources?
Here’s to his prompt re-arrest. The last time it took them over 13 years, so good luck. They’re going to need it.

Gas prices in the state of California have risen to the point where it’s now cheaper to fill up in Mexico.
In the last five days, gas has increased US 53.7 cents in the coastal border city of San Diego, with the average price now over $4 per gallon due to supply shortages. In Tijuana, however, 24 kilometers south, gas prices remain unchanged at 13.57 pesos per liter, equivalent to US $3.27 per gallon.
The trend started late last week when gas prices in San Diego became more expensive than in Baja California. Self-serve regular gasoline in San Diego increased 15.2 cents on Sunday after having increased 16.7 cents on Saturday and 8.4 cents on Friday.
The increases continued into this week: on Monday in San Diego the average gallon of regular reached $3.50 and has continued to rise. Some observers believe gas prices could continue going up before settling in the fall.
Marie Montgomery of the Automobile Club of Southern California cited inadequate supply. She said Southern California refiners were outbid by Mexico competitors for foreign oil last week, and therefore failed to receive any new shipments.
Plus the ExxonMobil refinery in Torrance, California, is still offline as the operator awaits permission from the South Coast Air Quality Management District to use refurbished equipment during repairs, Montgomery added.
In the 1970s, as inflation and supply shortages forced rationing in the U.S., Baja California prices were 50% of those north of the border. Diesel in Baja California during that time cost 25 cents.
“I remember I had a VW Rabbit diesel, into which I installed an extra 10-gallon tank,” author and chef Udo Winkler told Mexico News Daily. “And I used to think that it was cheaper to see customers in my diesel than it was to make a phone call. The drive from Redlands [California] was about 1-½ hours to the border. Got some tacos for lunch and headed back. The diesel at that time got 44 miles per gallon, and at .25 cents per gallon, the trip was well worthwhile.”

The fury of Hurricane Dolores is being felt today on the island of Socorro, state of Colima, but it’s not likely to have any major effects elsewhere on the Pacific coast of Mexico.
Downgraded by hurricane forecasters to Category 3, Dolores was located just 85 kilometers from Socorro, part of the Revillagigedo Archipelago, at 10:00am Central today. The group of four volcanic islands, population 54, is part of the municipality of Manzanillo, and lie between 720 and 970 kilometers to the west of that jurisdiction in Colima.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said this morning that Dolores is expected to continue moving west-northwest or northwest, with some weakening later today. By early Saturday it could be a tropical storm.
Tropical storm winds were occurring on Socorro Island earlier this morning but will diminish during the day, said the forecast.
The hurricane was 385 kilometers south-southwest of Cabo San Lucas in Baja California Sur, which can expect very heavy rainfall, winds of at least 50 km/h and a swell of two to four meters, the National Meteorological Service said today.
Rain is also forecast for Sinaloa and Nayarit, and waves of one to three meters.
