A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Zipolite_playa_beach_bay_oaxaca_travel_guideOne of Mexico's hidden secrets are the beaches on the Riviera Oaxaqueña. From the bohemian Zipolite, the busy port of Puerto Angel, the mangroves of Ventanilla, and the beautiful beaches of San Agustinillo there is a beach for everyone here. This a very peaceful place where hammocks line every restaurant and siestas are higly encouraged. Spend a good time here and find yourself finally finding that peace and serenity you seek from a beach vacation.

La Loma Linda

Set atop of a hill overlooking the beautiful beach of Zipolite are the cabañas of La Loma Linda. With it's close access to the beach and killer view this place is the best location in town. Each cabaña has it's very distinct characteristics, but I ended up choosing Casita, a bungalow with an attached kitchen and private patio. It turned out to be great to stay here for a week because of all the features like the kitchen equipment, stove top, refrigerator, clothes washing sink, and it's separate bathroom and shower. Katja, the manager of La Loma Linda, is very approachable and was especially knowledgeable about the area. We had ended up going to several of her recommendations and greatly appreciated the local scoop. They are also very quick to provide you with anything to make the most of your trip, we borrowed some of Katja's boards while here for the waves. Breakfast is available here, for an additional price. It's a great menu, with good vegetarian options and fair prices, I ended up going only once because during low season they ask for a reservation a day ahead. Finally, it's an amazing overall value, an unbelievably great price and awesome cabaña in one of the most spectacular beaches.

Cafe Maya

A good beach-side restaurant should have great seafood, cold beer, and hammocks for napping after. This small cafe on the shores of Zipolite has all three along with a beautiful view of the beach to enjoy. Kate, the chef of Cafe Maya, uses fresh local product to prepare burritos, breakfast, and sushi. We came during low season, and they brought us fresh tuna from the nearby port to make us sashimi and sushi. Although not Mexican, it is a great way to taste local Mexican seafood. Make sure you try some of the burritos, they make some tasty homemade tortillas and salsas.

Hotel Nude Zipolite

Hotel Nude Zipolite

This place surprised me because it's incredibly well put together. First of all it's the nicest looking spot on Zipolite beach. It has lounge chairs, day beds, a huge patio facing the sea and really good service. There are fantastically-made cocktails, including my favorite the caipirinha. It also has big, tasty portions of food for incredible prices. I highly recommend trying the coconut-crusted shrimp or some of the fish tacos here. The hotel is located on the farthest point at the right side of the beach. This a great place to spend a whole day doing nothing but sipping on those tropical drinks you've been dreaming of.

Lobster

One of the best experiences you can have on the beach is having one of these freshly caught spiny crustaceans prepared a la minute for you. You can find them at every beach town, but if you want to get a good price you have to go to Puerto Angel. The town Puerto Angel is still a very active fishing port that provides most of the seafood in the region. This is one of the cheapest places you can enjoy a whole lobster right off the boat. A lobster dish will cost you about 250 MXN$ including plantain rice, a salad, and salsas.

Ceviche

Ceviche

One of the more recognizable Latin American seafood dishes. The freshest of seafood makes this dish phenomonal. Fresh seafood is everywhere here, but one of the best places to try it was at one of the small food shacks at Estacahuitle Bay. The families here go out to fish for there own product for the restaurant. That kind of work, make this dish a lot more special.

Estacahuitle Bay

Estacahuitle Bay

The most beautiful bay on the riviera because of its turquoise waters and gentle waves. The beaches are small on this bay but its still a local secret so you wont encounter much tourists. It's only a little further up from Puerto Angel so you can enjoy both in the same day. The town of Puerto Angel I found very dirty and I was warned that there is alot of dumping into the shores and not advised to swim here. Estacahuitle is also a great place to snorkel, one of the restaurants there can rent you equipment and even take you out on a boat to some further spots.

San Agustinillo

San Agustinillo

San Agustinillo is the perfect family beach. No nudity, calm ocean waters, and rows of restaurants. However, the price of everything here is higher than most beaches on the Riveria Oaxaqueña. There are many choices so you can find a good place. Mexico Lindo is a nice restaurant to enjoy reasonable prices and access to lounge chairs. It also has hammocks for siestas which I find a must after swimming and eating. San Agustinillo is next to Mazunte, and a short ride from Zipolite. Private taxis from Zipolite are 50 MXN$, or there always collectivos from the main road.
