A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Hi! I was thinking about flying to Mexico City this november and then taking a bus to Puerto Escondido. I am looking for a very simple place for me to kick back, relax and be a beach bum for a few months. I know this is a surfer town, but thats about all I know. Any advice? cheap places to stay? thoughts about the place? Warnings? I am a 21 year old canadian girl.

Gracias!

I've stayed often in Puerto Escondido but never got the chance to stay at the HostalMayflower----the one time I tried, they were fully booked. I have the idea that it is very cheap (their site does not give rates, I believe) and it is right on the road prohibited to cars that parallels the main beach----right in the center of the main part of PE.
Here is the web site of the hotel--you can contact them thru the address given on the site. There is always a crowd at this hotel, young people with whom you could hook up.

If you are a 21 year old girl traveling alone, just make sure you take the normal precautions you would in any other part of the world. But chances are the most dangereous thing you will see in PE are the massive waves on the main beach.

Have fun.

I've stayed at the Mayflower in their dorm rooms a few times. Prices were approx 15 CAD last time I was there (Jan 2007). It has a great location close to the main beach, and not far from most of the bus stations clustered just north of el crucero. Its run by a friendly German-speaking woman who also lived in Ottawa, Canada for a while. If you're staying several months, you might save money by finding an apt for rent; check at the tourist office. Things to do: surf, swim, snorkel, sleep, hike, eat, drink, travel to nearby nature reserves and beaches, but mostly do nothing.

Rblakney is right about the waves; be careful when you go in the water. Each beach has its own character. Say hello to the lifeguards or bring a buddy with you when you go swimming.

You can also stay cheaply on Zicatela, head up any street off the main drag. The street heading up to the highway nesr Mexpipe has a few nice, cheap places to stay. There a few strange characters wandering around, but most are harmless. Also a lot of older Canadians. If Puerto is too crowded for your tastes head down to Mazunte/ziolite, which is a much younger crowd. November is Fiestas de Noviembre, surf and fishing contests, really a lot of fun

Thanks a lot for the advice guys! I'll look into it all, and I look forward to having a relaxing trip. Let me know if you happen to be down that way, and the beer is on me.

Thanks again.

Hi assunta.

Zipolite would be perfect for you. Yes, Zipolite, just as Puerto Escondido is a surfer beach....Playa Zipolite is also a budget, backpackers, off the beaten path, cheap, naturist, hippie, yoga, sun lovers, sand lovers, seafood lovers, paradise. Located about in the middle of Puerto Escondido to the west, and Huatulco to the east.

Please check out my Zipolite Webpages starting here: http://community-2.webtv.net/ivanjay/IVANJSNAVELYHOMEPORT/
I know some of the links need work, but there are/is many links available for the zipolite area.

I recommend a good place to start your 1st night or 2, would be at Lyoban Hostel. SAFE, and a lot of just wonderful people run Lyoban. All of the taxi's caught in Pochutla know Lyoban. Lyoban sits right next door to the only church, on the only road that passes through Zipolite, located in old downtown Zipolite. From Lyoban you can check out the area and explore ... or mayby stay. Right now during LOW season a 2nd floor (secure too) hammock starts at 70 peso's, (less than $7 US per night).

Check out Lyoban Webpage here: http://www.lyoban.com.mx/main.html

Also, my Zipolite Yahoo Group is located here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/zipolite/

Over the years since Novermber of 2000, myself and members have added over 4500 messages plus responses, with information on, about and around Zipolite, Oaxaca andMexico

After the photo and introduction to the Zipolite YahooGroup main paige, you will see the most recent messages added box. There is a search box here. Type in [[ bus, zipolite ]]]into the search box, then click on SEARCH. Over 350 messages, with info and links, and past responce to questions are listed. If you search [[ Puerto Escondido ]] over 600 messages with information of all types are listed. I find my Zipolite Yahoo Group a good place to search for Mexico information.

And with over 450 current members, many who live on Zipolite, to Pochutla, Puerto Angel, Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, Oaxaca City and Huatulco, to pass visitors and budget travelers .... your questions will be heard. NO questions are considered stupid.

You will have a blast at the beach of the dead (dead = the spirits who float through the air)

:)

Playa Zipolite, OaxacaSouthern Mexico, in the jungle, in the Mexican pipeline on thePacificWelcome to
the Beach of the Dead, where the spirits fly friendly through the air. Everyone is welcome at Zipolite!

Welcome to Hostel Lyoban! We are on beautiful Zipolite Beach in Oaxaca, Mexico, a nude beach with a safe and respectful attitude. We offer rooms on the beach with restaurant, pool, bar, and wireless Internet access. Come visit us!

Lyoban is originally a zapotecan word (LYO-BAAN).

The word refers to a holy place where the "cloud-men" arrived when they were able to achieve the highest level of spirituality. There they stayed, in the Lyo-baan for eternity. Maintaining peace and balance, day by day.
Zipolite is made up of establishments that are managed by the families that live here, with lots of different services like restaurants, bar, disco, stores etc, offering economical prices. Here in Lyoban we´re no exception, and with our prices and the quality of service we can offer you a happy stay throughout your vacation where the sun, sand, sea, good food and good beer become your friends.

In Lyoban we offer various types of accommodations. Please decide which one suits your needs and let us know what you prefer when you make your reservation.

Remember that all our accommodation options include free use of all our recreation equipment including swimming pool, billiards, ping pong, futbolito, board games, wireless internet connection, and beach volleyball.

The principal activity here in Zipolite is "just resting". Resting in a very magical environment with plenty of space and peace, living in touch with nature. It is something that all our visitors have described like "a magic world" very far from any civilization or noise.

The coexistence with guys from many different places, opened minded, lovers of nature, peace and freedom is in itself the main attraction, usually with very interesting and fun results.

The optional nudism that characterizes this place (mainly in the west part of the beach) reflects and represents a free and respectful attitude to all people as well as respect for a natural life style. It is NOT exactly a beach for families or kids although they´re welcome, and it is not a family beach because over the years visitors have made this beach an special place for young people who like to "be and let be".

Here you can DO NOTHING and rest all day in a hammock and reading a good book, one that you brought or we can lend you one or two from our library. There you will find books from different languages and topics.

But if you are the kind of person that enjoys being active, here in LYOBAN as in Zipolite and its neighborhood
you´ll find lots of different activities:

Billiards
Ping Pong
Board games
Wireless connection
Library
Night bonfires
Volley Ball
Depending on the season you can find other activities like:

SURFING IN ZIPOLITE
SAND CASTLES ON THE BEACH
DIVING THE OAXACAN COAST
FISHING & BOAT TRIPS
SEA TURTLE MUSEUM
NEW YEAR’S PARTY

ZIPOLITE HISTORY

A long, long time ago this beach was visited by the Zapotecans who made it a magical place. They used to come for meditation or resting.

Recently in the 60´s this beach was rediscovered by young people from all the world recognized as "hippies", who found in this magical place a great charm for living together with the natives. It was a new touristic concept. Lots of foreigners including Italians, French, Germans, and people from other countries made Zipolite their home.

Here we have a strong interest in living in touch with nature and the rustic life, far from the modern world with its complications and comforts. Here there is an open minded life style that minimizes the culture differences, languages, beliefs, etc., of the various people.

The town is a collection of houses that offer services, restaurants, bars, discos, shops, and other features for visitors, where you can have very special adventure.

ZIPOLITE is a beach and an experience that any young person can´t miss!
