A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Oaxaca is a safe place in general. There might be some political turmoil in the city of Oaxaca this year due to governor elections, though if you stay out of the demonstrators there will be no problem. The beaches are safe. This state has beautiful beaches like Puerto Escondido, Zipolite, Mazunte and Huatulco. Puerto Escondido is a surfers' paradise, so (in all the beaches) beware of the waves. Zipolite and Mazunte cater more to "hippie" and students tourism, though Zipolite has now some classy small hotels like El Alquimista. Huatulco is probably the best choice for families.

Also, if you drive from Oaxaca city to the beach, take a lot precautions with the road, as it is goes up and down the mountains, it is very slim and can be misty.

In general Mexico is a much safer place than what media depicts. You need to take care with some things like driving in deserted highways (mainly in Mexican northern states and by night). Stay in the tourist areas, and have the usual caution with your stuff.

Murder rate is some 12/100.000 inhabitants, versus 6/100.000 in the US and just 1/100.000 in Europe. But most of the murders are because of the drug wars, between rival gangs and the police and the navy/army. They never target tourists. The last foreigner homicides I heard of were the wife of a US Penitentiary officer (apparently a revenge) and a brazilian-american woman killed by her American husband in a Cancún resort.

It's really fun, safe (take precaution), beautiful, and great!
I have been there it's sooo much fun. But, still it doesn't mean you shouldn't be careful. I'm not from there, but I went a few weeks ago! Good luck!

Oaxaca is my FAV Mex state. If you are worried about all the drug violence, I do not think Oaxaca is at the top of the list of places to worry about. However, this doesn´t mean you should not take precaution. Oaxaca is not in the heart of the drug cartelviolence. Instead, it appears to less touristy and far enough away from the USMex border that this isn´t a big issue. I found the city of Oaxaca to be great! If I had children I would have no problem traveling there but just like any concerned parent, I wouldn´t allow them out of my sight. Safe travels!!

I spent two weeks there in February and all was well. Never felt threatened. This was my third trip to Oaxaca.

They had a mild earthquake but there was no heavy damage. Even if the teacher's strike has started, just stay away from the areas where the demonstrations are going on and you won't have a problem.

Oaxaca is a beautiful area = have a wonderful time.
