A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

ZIPOLITE The beach, like the town, is called "Zipolite*, there are many versions about the origin of the name and the strongest is that in Zapotec it means "beach of the dead*. The name is due to the legend that says that the Zapotecs buried their dead here, traveling from tens and even hundreds of kilometers away. There are other studies not yet certified that say it means "Place of Snails*. The sand on the beach is fine, describing a crescent along its entire length. The waves are medium-strong at all times of the year, with waves and very strong underwater currents predominating in the rainy season. One of the charms of the plava in Zipolite is its tolerance for nudism. Before, nudism was limited to both ends of the beach, love beach in the East and another small beach to the west (Alquimista/Shambala side). Nowadays nudism is seen more on the whole beach (only in holiday seasons), also families with their children. In its 1.75 km of extension, the beach has bars. palapas, restaurants, hotels and all kinds of services for tourists

ZIPOLITE
