A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

* Some lucky ones have been able to see how the whales give birth in the warm waters of this paradise, the Magical town of Mazunte located halfway between Puerto Escondido and Huatulco, on the Oaxaca Coast.

Oaxaca, January 6, 2022.- The warmth of the waters of Punta Cometa in the magical town of Mazunte, on the Oaxaca Coast, where fabulous sunsets can be seen from its rocks, this season attracts hundreds of whales that come to give birth to their calves.

The whales move away from the cold waters of the north where they spend most of the year and return to the south, where they were born, to give birth.

This paradise located halfway between Puerto Escondido and Huatulco, is also the preferred place for herds of up to 200 manta rays that enjoy the warmth of these waters.

This warm sea is the place that is also the favorite of dolphins, turtles and killer whales, among other species that are sighted by some lucky national and foreign visitors who visit Mazunte, where the Mexican Turtle Center is located and that in previous years was the place where the largest number of turtles were slaughtered.

In this warm season, it is possible to see the herds of stingrays "fly", take great turns out of the water and fall into the water to "stun" the school they feed on.

It seems that the mantas play, enjoying their great jumps and turns that surprise the visitors who admire them from the tourist boats.

It is a delight for the eyes and for human sensitivity, for nature lovers who can also attend the nesting of turtles that have chosen these beaches to lay their thousands of eggs each year.

The protection measures for the turtle allowed the increase of specimens with the ban decreed many years ago and that has caused the rebound of recreational activities as an economic alternative for the locals.

Here there are at least 20 boats with the capacity to transport about 14 people, explains in an interview César Gil Ortiz Avalos, from the tourist company Punta Cometa Tours.

The season for whale, turtle, dolphin and stingray sightings, he explained, is from December to March, “in this season we can see the stingrays jumping, it is like a game for them. When they jump they have food downstairs and they eat quickly, sardines, whatever they find. There are herds of 200 or 300 manta rays jumping. "

“Although most of them walk in herds, some jump alone, but we can see whales, killer whales, dolphins and turtles all year round. The whales come, mate and have their calves. The whale stretches for nine months, comes every nine months to give birth. Same with blankets ”.

However, for the mantas, their main predator is also here, the killer whales, which “devour them in minutes because it is a special feast. They can still eat calves, turtles and dolphins ”.

César Gil Ortiz Avalos explains that the high season has passed and tourism dropped, “from December 20 until New Year's it was good but it's already down. Local tourists and from all countries come from all countries to Mazunte, San Agustinillo ”.

He invited us Oaxacans to get to know this spectacular place, since there will be sightings until the month of March and there will be no saturation of visitors If there is tourism but not saturated

They have sightings until March, when "tourism drops due to the rainy season and there are no more whales, only turtles and dolphins."

He said that those who work with the boats on the high seas tours have a lot of respect for the marine fauna, such as the whales, “they have their offspring in the high seas and sometimes they meet their young, they have the respect of keeping their distance from the whales. Whales. Sometimes they interact with the boats, but they keep a distance of 5 to 10 meters ”.

He also recommended visiting the area where the effect of bioluminescence is recorded in Manialtepec, which "sometimes also occurs in the sea when it is calm from December to March."

Currently there is a good hotel offer in the region with room prices ranging from 200 to 1,500 or 2,000 pesos a night.
