A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

I've been told the bus ride is scary due to terrain and poor roads, but perhaps that's an exaggeration. Can anyone tell me what the bus ride is like, and how long?

The ADO bus ride is quite comfortable (reclining seats and video movies), though the many winding turns can induce nausea in some folks (we always take Dramamine which induces drowsiness so we even sleep a little). The ride from Oaxaca varies in time (9-12 hours or more) depending on the departure time: day time is a longer ride (stop for lunch), night time is a shorter ride (see the ADO website for approximate trip durations). Since you are going to Zipolite, you will most likely get off the bus in Pochutla and then take a taxi to Zipolite (another 20 minute ride).

That said, for a MUCH quicker trip, fly AeroTucan from Oaxaca to Huatulco (30-35 minutes). Once at the Huatulco airport, you can take the ADO bus, or local bus, or taxi to Pochutla (about an hour's ride) and then a taxi to Zipolite.

I had never heard of the ADO bus picking people up at the airport and taking them to Pochutla. We are considering spending the first night the first night of out trip in Puerto Angel but I thought 750 peso from the convenience store was a bit high. my daughter paid a cab in front of the Hotel Villablanca 550 pesos to go to Puerto Angel last year. I have taken the van or collectivo from La Crucesita to the crucero (interchange) where you take the taxi or collectivo to San Agustin or to Pochutla many time but would not do it loaded down with luggage.
