A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

One of the Mexican states that can boast many attractions for tourism and great cultural wealth is Oaxaca .

It is one of the destinations that has become more relevant among national and foreign tourists due to its wide range that includes from beautiful beaches ,  archaeological centers , colonial buildings , internationally recognized gastronomy and others.

natural attractions, which have made it a must-see destination.

In addition to the undeniable attractiveness of its capital, which is located five hours by road leaving Mexico City,  Oaxaca  has enormous natural wealth on its coast, famous for having its best-known beach destination, Huatulco , but also with  virgin beaches whose particular waves allow the practice of water sports such as surfing  and some places that have become a magnet for young tourists for a few years now.

So, if a trip to the beach is one of your next plans, forget about the most popular destinations, such as Cancun or Acapulco , and give yourself the opportunity to know a different, accessible place with added attractions such as its gastronomy and handicrafts.

It is located 250 km from the center of Oaxaca . It is famous because the sea turtle is preserved and conserved here , hence the centers for the care and reproduction of this species have been developed, such as the Mexican Turtle Center , where you can see some specimens, such as turtles. golfinas, prietas, lute and those of tortoiseshell, although you should take note that for the moment it remains closed.

Among the most famous beaches that are located in Mazunte are Playa Mermejita, Playa Rinconcito , Playa San Agustinillo , Puerto Ángel and Punta Cometa , the latter being one of the most famous and popular in the area. Usually all it is practicing surf , thanks to its high waves.

In addition, between the months of December to March there is a humpback whale watching , so that you take it into account. And, if you stay a long time on the beach, it is likely that you will be able to observe dolphins and manta rays , as well as other marine species.

For lunch, you can delight yourself in any stall, place or restaurant specialized in Oaxacan cuisine , where you can taste everything from seafood and fish to tlayudas , grasshoppers , iguana tamales and its famous  black mole .

Here you can also take the opportunity to enjoy, in case you have never experienced it, the temazcal ritual

It is located almost 260 kilometers from the state capital. This destination unfortunately based its economy on hunting turtles, back in 1965, when it was founded. It was until 1990 when this activity was prohibited and the area changed its turn to tourism. Another economic activity that is still preserved is fishing .

Thanks to the fact that the area remains little exploited, the tourist can enjoy the nature of the place at its best. As in Mazunte , surfing is also practiced here , thanks to the open sea areas that allow it. For those looking only to swim in the sea or kayak , there are stretches of quiet beach where the waves are minimal, ideal to enjoy with the family and the little ones.

Due to the fact that the communication routes in the area are still very limited, one of its accesses, which is of great attraction for visitors, is by sea, which allows you to explore the area by boat and learn more about the natural beauties of area.

Thanks to its crystalline and turquoise waters, as well as the large number of species in the area, you can practice diving in some of the beaches that surround San Agustinillo , such as Boquilla , Playa del Panteón , Bajo de Fuente , Punta Faro , Troja ,  Estacahuite , La Mina and Muelle Beach , where there are schools of colorful fish, lobsters and corals.

As in Mazunte , during the months of December to March you can see the passage of orcas and humpback whales that transit off its coasts as part of their migratory transit.

Renowned for its sunsets, they have also started giving yoga and meditation classes by the sea.

It is, perhaps, one of the best known destinations in the state. It is the only beach recognized as a nudist , a lifestyle that has been practiced for more than two decades. In addition to nudism , you can do other types of activities, such as fishing , surfing , snorkeling and recreational diving, thanks to its intense waves.

To eat, there are places and stalls that offer from the catch of the day, to local snacks, such as the traditional tlayudas  and dishes that combine pre-Hispanic recipes with European touches, such as the famous beef jerky or the seven Oaxacan moles: chichilo, yellow, manchamanteles, green, red, red and black.

Although the place is recognized as a nudist site , visitors are not required to practice it. For those who do want to, there are activities around it, such as yoga, meditation, games and sports classes taught by the Mexican Nudist Federation .

Zipolite is located 3 hours and 50 minutes from the city of Oaxaca  by land. Another way to get there is to fly to Huatulco and take a bus there, which is about an hour and a half away.

It has eight beaches available for tourists where you can enjoy different activities, ranging from surfing , thanks to its great waves; until the release of turtles on the beach.

Zipolite is another destination that, despite its greater influx of tourists, continues to preserve its rustic atmosphere that continues to be attractive to visitors, who are attracted by the natural beauties of the region.

Thanks to the fact that its beaches  are connected, travelers can explore them by boat, which allows them to enjoy the ecosystem and see the flora and fauna of the area up close.

Among its attractions are the waterfalls located in Puerto Ángel  and for those looking for a natural attraction at night, Puerto Escondido is the ideal place to appreciate the phenomenon of bioluminescence, which occurs in the Laguna de Manialtepec and the Lagunas de Chacahua .

To stay there are cabins, family inns, small hotels (none chain), vacation rentals and Airbnb available , or you can even camp on the beach.

Although nudism is not official here, there are usually areas where it is practiced.

It is located 290 kilometers from the center of the city of Oaxaca and takes about 4 hours to transfer from there by land. Leaving the CDMX, you can travel to Puerto Escondido by plane, the flight lasts 1:15 minutes.
