A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

We want to share information about our artisan workshops that we offer in Piña Palmera, in Zipolite. Come join and have some fun!
Our workshops are a collaboration between people with and without disabilities, and are open to the local community as well as travelers who are interested in socially-conscious activities while traveling:
CLAY: Each week we offer a clay workshop. This is a great opportunity for people of all ages, with and without disabilities, to take part in the creative process of working with clay. Our clay workshop is the only one with a fixed schedule, Wednesdays (3:00pm to 5:00pm) and Saturdays (10:00am to 12:00pm).
BIRD MOBILE PAINTING: The painting workshop is where we create our signature birds. In this workshop, you have the opportunity to see how we build our birds, and then paint the body of the birds with wings that are already decorated. We'll assemble your bird mobile for you so you can take it with you!
COCONUT OIL: Have you ever wondered how coconut oil is made? In this workshop, you'll learn step-by-step how we make our artisan, cold-pressed coconut oil. You'll start by chopping coconuts and trying the coconut fruit, the manzana. After drying the coconut meat, we use a bicycle mill and hand press to extract the coconut oil. Included in the cost of this workshop is a bottle of our own artisanal coconut oil.
RECYCLED PAPER: In Piña Palmera we make a variety of recycled paper products from diaries to notebooks to picture frames to single sheets. During this workshop, you'll learn how we make our recycled paper, which is possible to do at home! You'll also learn how we color our paper using local plants such as bougainvillea. You'll take sheets of recycled paper with you after the workshop!
WORM COMPOSTING: We have worm composting in Piña with California red wigglers. Come see how our food breaks down naturally when it isn't tossed into the landfill. The worms play an important role in creating a rich natural fertilizer, perfect for a garden. This workshop is a favorite for the little ones!
