A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Hail closes freeway; winter carries on

Heavy rains, thunderstorms, wind, hail and cool temperatures forecast

Just as many parts of the country had recovered from Cold Front #41, along comes #42.
There was enough hail yesterday on the Mexico City-Puebla freeway that the highways agency Capufe briefly closed a section of it.
Motorists were issued warnings over the course of several hours via Twitter that traffic was heavy, and wet and wintry conditions required extreme caution.
Today, the National Meteorological Service is warning of more to come in 20 states, along with heavy rain, electrical storms and strong winds.
Heavy rains with the possibility of thunderstorms and hail are forecast for State of México, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Chiapas and Guerrero, while strong winds with gusts up to 50 km/h are expected in Chihuahua and Coahuila.
Higher regions in Chihuahua and Durango will see temperatures as low as -5 to 0 C while those in Sonora, Zacatecas, State of Mexico and Puebla will find it slightly warmer at 0 to 5 C.
The hot spot in the past 24 hours was Choix, Sinaloa, where a temperature of 35 C was reached; the coldest temperature, -7 C, was recorded in La Rosilla, Durango.
Snow has closed a couple of major freeways in the past two weeks: the Mexico-Puebla highway was shut for nine hours on March 12, and four days later a section of the Durango-Mazatlán was affected by a brief closure.
As Puebla resident Miguel Olivares told Televisa, “the weather is a bit crazy.” But he reminded a reporter of the old saying, “Febrero loco y marzo otro poco.”
February is crazy, and March can be a little crazy, too.
