A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

Fifteen earthquakes were recorded so far in the country during the first day of 2015 according to reports from the National Seismological Service (SSN).  The first quake was recorded at zero hours and 10 minutes, with a magnitude of 3.8 degrees and whose epicenter was he placed 29 kilometers northeast of Mapatepec, Chiapas.  According to the SSN, the epicenters of earthquakes in this January 1 were placed 6 in Chiapas, 5 Guerrero and 4 in Oaxaca, ranking in the latter state the highest intensity 3.9 degrees occurred at 07:41 hours, 83 kilometers southwest of Pinotepa Nacional.  It represents 14.28 percent of earthquakes recorded nationwide this day. The other earthquakes occurred in the municipalities of Tecpan, San Marcos and Petatlan, Guerrero, two in Pijijiapan and one in Huixtla, Chiapas.  During 2014 7,422 earthquakes were recorded nationwide, of which 2,017 have occurred with epicenter in Oaxaca, corresponding to 27.17% of the earthquakes registered in the country.  Chiapas ranked first seismic activity with 2,512 earthquakes, while Oaxaca was ranked second with 2,017 earthquakes, and Guerrero third with 1,393 earthquakes.
