A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

ZIPOLITE VIDEO 2014: CHECK OUT THE RELAXING ATMOSPHERE OF ZIPOLITE IN THE VIDEO BELOW.

The beautiful and relaxing beach village Zipolite is located in the Oaxaca State of Mexico. The population is about 931 people, and the people you see there come from all over the world. It is about a 45 minutes to an hour drive from Pochutla, and it is about a 2 hour drive from Puerto Escondido. It is in between the small beach villages of Mazunte and Puerto Angel. Both are about 10 to 15 minutes away by car. Riding a camioneta is the best way to travel among the towns. A camionetta ride from Zipolite to Pochutla is about 10 pesos and you just wait along the main road for one of them. A camionetta is a pick up truck that has iron bars welded in the back to create a transportation vehicle. It is open air and pretty fun to ride!

Zipolite is known for a hippie and free spirit lifestyle among some of the travelers and residents of the place. There you can find marijuana and hash being smoked by many of the travelers and residents in the area.

Zipolite has a number of good restaurants that serve good Oaxacan food and also Western food. A lot of places sell hamburgers and fries that taste excellent. The fries are made from fresh potatoes that were cut minutes before they appeared on your plate. There are also good Italian cuisines in the area with spaghetti and pizza shops in the area.

Zipolite also has a tattoo shop where many locals and tourists go to get inked up. Maybe you can leave with a permanent souvenir from your stay at Zipolite.

The name Zipolite also means "Beach of the Dead" warning of the strong currents on the beach. Be careful of the rip tides, and don't panic if you are caught in one. Just swim sideways and not against the current, and you will be fine.  Learn what to do when youencounter a rip tide here.
