A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Zipolite & honeymoon in 2 days
Hola friends
Thanks for previous advice about Puerto & Zipolite. We are currently on our honeymoon in Puerto Escondido and were planning to head to zipolite on the 27th June. I was hoping someone in Zipolite has some information on how things are?
There is still a lot of rain here in PE but most of the businesses have recovered after only a week.
Any advice would be so gratefully appreciated
Cheers
Natalie

Try the Puerto Escondido and / or Huatulco forum. Alternatively, and better yet given that you want to travel soon, ask your hotel manager to contact people down that way.

I've heard from a few different groups down there, and they are all living pretty good. There is lots of debris cleaned up. Here is a Facebook communication with my friend Kevin, at Colibri. Phillipe is another friend who had only a small bar in a thatched hut on the beach near colibri, before the storm. What he has now, I do not know, but he does have chicken soup and beer. So if you go, find Colibri and talk to Kevin about where to stay. It quiet this time of year so I'm sure there are places to stay. Some places have new sunroofs, but others are fully functional. I've seen a couple different groups showing off what a good meal they were about to eat, and it looked wonderful. I would still go, people still have good smiles on their faces. If you have facebook, look up 'colibri zipolite'.
Anthony James Patti Glad to see you survived well. In the end I'm sure you will be stronger for the experience. How's Phillipe! See you in December.

Just a note. When I was in Puerto Escondido this past January, I told them I was going back to Zipolite, and thehotel I stayed at (a nice one), warned me not to go there and made up foolish stories of drugs and robberies, I am sure they were just trying to keep me in their town. Zipo feels much safer than escondido. The people are much friendlier in zipo.
