A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

We stayed at a really nice, cheap place with a GREAT internet connection. A great internet equals gold for us and updates for you, so that’s always a big plus! It was situated right in front of the beach and the break, the owner was super relaxed and we digged the vibe here and in Puerto Escondido in general. Here’s some portraits and colors from the street, as well as photos from Papaya.

This is Puerto Escondido, the mexican wave machine aka the “mexican pipeline” . It´s a beach brake that gets overhead and tubing with NO swell.. The swell was about 2ft when these images where shot. If you wanna have a look at hard core surf you should definitely go here cuz i haven’t seen a wave that brakes like this so close to the shore anywhere else. Craaazy, every second surfer that came up had a broken board. I jumped in on the point further down the beach, and that was tricky enough with the take off spot over the rocks, with every one pushing the limits more and more. Puerto Escondido is a surfers macho-man-paradise number 1.

Two years ago Petter and I attended a workshop with a man called Phil in Coffee Bay, South Africa. Petter made an super nice necklace out of a stone and it became his favorite. It later got sacrificed to the Swedish surf and he says he has felt naked ever since. Until this day! He found a piece of amber and made a local artist here in Puerto Escondido turn it in to a necklace after his own design.

Super sweet breakfast at El Cafecito in Puerto Escondido! Can recommend the chocolate/banana milkshake, their banana cake, spinach/cheese croissant and their peanut butter toast with banana on.. Don’t know if Petter can recommend the “Mega plate for a hungry surfista” with three scrambeled eggs, bacon, pancakes…
