A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Yeah, that incident may be "out of time," but it did occur in Puerto, in the late 80's, as best I can recall. Probably between 1986 and 1990. I wasn't here for the occasion, and relied on accounts from a friend of mine who was here when that swell hit.

According to him, a big wave bodysurfer himself, the swell hit as described, and Foo and Bradshaw were in Puerto for it. I agree that surf forecasts in those days were sketchy at best, but my friend gave me an honest account of what happened, because he was really excited about having hit Puerto on such a big swell, with such illustrous surfing companions. (They were both well-known and famous at the time.) And he's not the kind of guy who BS'ed about surf.

I also took a little "literary license" with that incident, because either Bradshaw or Foo was sick with an apparent case of "tourista," and did not go out (I think that was Bradshaw) but that the other (Foo) did go out. The swell was big, as described, 25-30 foot faces with 25-foot lefts peeling off Marinero, running all the way to the inside of the Bay, and closing out at 8-foot where the creek hits the Bay.

Good observations, but I'm sure my friend will attest it occurred pretty much as described.
