A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

We sleep at Villa Escondida, a very nice place, 10 min walking from the beach, on the hill. The owner Giuliana is very friendly, the room are very cleaned and the garden is amazing.

Zipolite" get's under ones skin". Once experienced, it is never to be forgotten ! Zipolite is the perfect place to get away from all of the hectic craziness in the world, a place to slow waaaaaaaay down ...." down South". Most of the accomadations are rustic, but clean and charming. However," a new wave" of beautiful, top end, boutique hotels...

It may have been a cool hippie place once. Now Zipolite is what happens to most places that are marketed "a hippie getaway" for some time, it becomes a tourist rip-off. In Mexican terms overpriced, average quality, appalling service and dirty. I don't expect fast service in Mexico, of course, but I have backpacked a lot, and I have never...

We arrived late at night, made the mistake of not getting the taxi to drop us off at our hotel. There is very little street lighting and we felt a little venerable. The hotel we stayed in - Brisa Marina, was recommended to us by friends, and we loved it. We had a balcony room, overlooking the ocean. The room...
