A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Average Weather For Puerto Escondido, Mexico

Average Weather For Puerto Escondido, Mexico

Location

This report describes the typical weather at the Puerto Escondido International Airport (Puerto Escondido, Mexico) weather station over the course of an average year. It is based on a statistical analysis of the historical records from 1988 to 2011. Earlier records are either unavailable or considered too unreliable to be used for this analysis.

Temperature

Over the course of a year, the temperature typically varies from 71°F to 86°F and is rarely below 68°F or above 88°F.
The warm season lasts from May 6 to June 9 with an average daily high temperature above 86°F. The hottest day of the year is May 21, with an average high of 86°F and low of 78°F.
The cold season lasts from December 16 to March 4 with an average daily high temperature below 84°F. The coldest day of the year is January 16, with an average low of 71°F and high of 83°F.

Daily High and Low Temperature

The daily average low (blue) and high (red) temperature with percentile bands (inner band from 25th to 75th percentile, outer band from 10th to 90th percentile).

Fraction of Time Spent in Various Temperature Bands

The average fraction of time spent in various temperature bands: frigid (below 15°F), freezing (15°Fto 32°F), cold (32°F to 50°F), cool (50°F to 65°F), comfortable (65°F to 75°F), warm (75°F to85°F), hot (85°F to 100°F) and sweltering (above 100°F).

Clouds

The median cloud cover ranges from clear (8%) to mostly cloudy (87%). The sky is cloudiest on September 12 and clearest on February 10. The clearer part of the year begins around November 5. The cloudier part of the year begins around May 21.

Median Cloud Cover

The median daily cloud cover (black line) with percentile bands (inner band from 40th to 60th percentile, outer band from 25th to 75th percentile).
On February 10, the clearest day of the year, the sky is clear, mostly clear, or partly cloudy 43% of the time, and overcast or mostly cloudy 6% of the time.
On September 12, the cloudiest day of the year, the sky is overcast, mostly cloudy, or partly cloudy 44% of the time, and clear or mostly clear 7% of the time.

Cloud Cover Types

The fraction of time spent in each of the five sky cover categories. From top (most blue) to bottom (most gray), the categories are clear, mostly clear, partly cloudy, mostly cloudy, and overcast. Pink indicates missing data. Outside the United States clear skies are often reported ambiguously, leading them to be lumped in with the missing data.

Precipitation

The probability that precipitation will be observed at this location varies throughout the year. Precipitation is most likely around September 10, occurring in 39% of days. Precipitation is least likely around April 3, occurring in 0% of days.

Probability of Precipitation at Some Point in the Day

The fraction of days in which various types of precipitation are observed. If more than one type of precipitation is reported in a given day, the more severe precipitation is counted. For example, if light rain is observed in the same day as a thunderstorm, that day counts towards the thunderstorm totals. The order of severity is from the top down in this graph, with the most severe at the bottom.
Over the entire year, the most common forms of precipitation are drizzle, moderate rain, and light rain.
Drizzle is the most severe precipitation observed during 36% of those days with precipitation. It is most likely around September 8, when it is observed during 12% of all days.
Moderate rain is the most severe precipitation observed during 34% of those days with precipitation. It is most likely around September 14, when it is observed during 14% of all days.
Light rain is the most severe precipitation observed during 22% of those days with precipitation. It is most likely around September 14, when it is observed during 9% of all days.

Types of Precipitation Throughout the Year

Relative frequency of various types of precipitation over the course of a typical year.
During the warm season, which lasts from May 6 to June 9, there is a 13% average chance that precipitation will be observed at some point during a given day. When precipitation does occur it is most often in the form of drizzle (40% of days with precipitation have at worst drizzle), moderate rain (31%), and light rain (21%).
During the cold season, which lasts from December 16 to March 4, there is a 0% average chance that precipitation will be observed at some point during a given day. When precipitation does occur it is most often in the form of drizzle (82% of days with precipitation have at worst drizzle) and light rain (17%).

Warm Season Precipitation

Cold Season Precipitation

Relative frequency of various types of precipitation during the warm and cold seasons respectively.

Snow

Either snow is exceptionally unlikely to fall at any time during the year at this location or this station does not reliably report precipitation types.

Humidity

The relative humidity typically ranges from 56% (mildly humid) to 90% (very humid) over the course of the year, rarely dropping below 44% (comfortable) and reaching as high as98% (very humid).
The air is driest around February 28, at which time the relative humidity drops below 63%(mildly humid) three days out of four; it is most humid around September 16, exceeding85% (humid) three days out of four.

Relative Humidity

The average daily high (blue) and low (brown) relative humidity with percentile bands (inner bands from 25th to 75th percentile, outer bands from 10th to 90th percentile).

Dew Point

Dew point is often a better measure of how comfortable a person will find the weather than relative humidity because it more directly relates to whether perspiration will evaporate from the skin, thereby cooling the body. Lower dew points feel drier and higher dew points feel more humid.
Over the course of a year, the dew point typically varies from 62°F (mildy humid) to 77°F(oppressive) and is rarely below 56°F (comfortable) or above 79°F (oppressive).

Dew Point

The daily average low (blue) and high (red) dew point with percentile bands (inner band from 25th to 75th percentile, outer band from 10th to 90th percentile).

Wind

Over the course of the year typical wind speeds vary from 0.0 mph to 12.2 mph, rarely exceeding 20.2 mph.
The highest average wind speed of 9.8 mph occurs around June 1, at which time the average daily maximum wind speed is 12.2 mph.
The lowest average wind speed of 6.4 mph occurs around November 9, at which time the average daily maximum wind speed is 11.4 mph.

Wind Speed

The average daily minimum (red), maximum (green), and average (black) wind speed with percentile bands (inner band from 25th to 75th percentile, outer band from 10th to 90th percentile).
The wind is most often out of the south west (10% of the time) and south (10% of the time). The wind is least often out of the north west (1% of the time), north (1% of the time), and south east (4% of the time).

Wind Directions Over the Entire Year

The fraction of time spent with the wind blowing in the various directions over the entire year. Values do not sum to 100% because the wind direction is undefined when the wind speed is zero.

Fraction of Time Spent with Various Wind Directions

The fraction of time spent with the wind blowing in the various directions on a daily basis. Stacked values do not always sum to 100% because the wind direction is undefined when the wind speed is zero.
