A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .
Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before. Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.ivan

Where to Travel for Thanksgiving This Year

Where to Travel for Thanksgiving This Year |
If there's one responsible thing you do over Labor Day weekend, let it be solidifying your Thanksgiving plans. We know it's difficult to think ahead to the next big holiday while you're still working on taking advantage of the current one, but we hear from our friends at Hipmunk that airfare is expected to rise significantly after the holiday. If you don't already have a destination in mind, consider some of our favorites for Thanksgiving. Charleston, SC Get ready for some Southern charm in Charleston, best known for its plantation homes and haunted tours. Its historical architecture creates a cozy atmosphere, and the culinary scene is foodie-approved. Plus, you'll find one of the ShermansTravel staff's favorite under-rated beach two hours north, and sleepy Hilton Head two hours south, just in case you need a little more seclusion. While hotel rates in town easily reach $400 per night on busy weekends, you can easily find options in the $200-$300 range over Thanksgiving. Rooms at King Charles Inn, a historic AAA three-diamond property, for example, currently start at $212. For East Coasters, these prices make the moderate airfare worth it -- we found round-trip flights from NYC from $481 leaving Wednesday and returning Sunday on United, and from $431 leaving Wednesday and returning Saturday on JetBlue. Oaxaca, Mexico For an international getaway, this southern Mexico destination is fairly affordable to reach from both coasts as well as the Midwest. For a Wednesday to Sunday trip, roundtrip fares start from $450 from Chicago, $656 from New York, and $612 from San Diego, all on Aeromexico. November is somewhat of a sweet spot here, just after the summer rains have ended but before the cold descends -- and you know you can plan for some beach time when Puerto Escondido holds its big surf competition mid-month. The laid-back beach town is also home to well-priced lodging, with rates running from under $100 per night for more simplistic inns to $200 per night for fancier boutiques. In nearby Huatulco, you'll find the same slow pace, with plenty of wildlife and gorgeous churches to admire. Whichever you choose, you'll be able to indulge in mole and mezcal without the crowds of Oaxaca's flashier neighbors. |
