A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Took a 2 dive trip yesterday with Hurricane and was very happy. The service was excellent, the gear in really good condition. We went to 2 different locations and Dive Master Antonio was very knowledgeable and helpful. Met great people on the boat and saw lots of good stuff on the coral banks, most of it greatly pointed out by...More

We booked with Hurricane Divers after reading reviews and recommendations on TA. Roberto (owner) was easy to communicate with via email and made planning things easy. My wife had some scuba experience but I had none, so we ended up with a bay tour with discoverScuba for two. We found the shop in plenty of time and met Blaise, our...More

Good to hear you enjoyed your all-day diving excursion with us. Whe you come to Huatulco again one day, maybe you can bring some commercial spray, we can't get it here! ;-) Happy New Year, RobertoMore

Being treated as if the service provider is doing you a favour is definetely not what you are looking for when you book a diving excursion. But that was precisely my experience at the front desk in Hurricane Divers. I was attended by a French guy by the name of Blaz who didn't even offered me a sit when I...More

I'm sorry you feel you didn't get the attention you deserved. All I can say is that the Christmas week is extremely busy for us and kitting out a boat full of divers in the morning can get a bit stressful. However, that's not an excuse. I'll tell you what, next time you're in Huatulco I'll invite you for a... More

We had such a nice experience with Rob and Pauline. We visited many wonderful Bahia's with great beaches! After snorkeling and swimming we had a fantastic lunch and snacks (made by Pauline herself). During the trip we saw flying fish, dolphins and a big turtle, really incredible!! Next time we will do the tour again. Thank you Rob and Pauline...More

My wife and I did a half day snorkeling tour. Communication in setting up the trip was great. We went to two different spots to snorkel. The guide even did a brief tour of the different beaches and slowed down for dolphins and a turtle. We both had a great time and enjoyed the entire trip. We were recommending them...More

We had a great experience with Hurricane Divers. We enjoyed an all day cruise of the bays with snorkeling and a picnic lunch. My husband also enjoyed a morning of diving. Thank you Pauline for a wonderful lunch! We highly recommend them and will snorkel/dive with them again if we return to Huatulco. Thanks to all the employees for a...More

We had 4 certified divers and 3 kids who hadn't dove before. they did the "Discover Scuba" package and we all dove together to a max. 40' depth. The crew were great, very professional and gave easy to understand instruction which made our inexperienced kids more comfortable. Our 10 yr old was particularly nervous about jumping out of the boat...More

Roberto, the owner provided excellent communication prior to our trip. Our dive guide, Blaz a frenchman, spoke English and of course Spanish. He was very calm, polite and enjoyable. The boat captain Javiar, was kind, helpful and very skilled in knowing where to go and where to anchor. He kept a safe watch on us while we were diving. We...More

I decided to finish my PADI Open Water course with Hurricane Divers in Nov. 2011. They had a good price and the instructor is very experienced (20+ years). However, my SCUBA diving experience was terrible. First of all, we were taken out in a fishing boat. There were no seats, no diving platform and barely even any covering from the...More

I'm very sorry to hear that you had such a bad experience. I honestly don't remember this happening, but last November I was abroad. What I can say is that our boat is indeed a "panga", as used in the tropics by thousands of dive operators. It does have seating and a sun roof, but it's not big enough to... More

Had a fantastic two weeks in Hautulco, the highlight being the full day snorkelling excursion with Hurricane divers. The crew really looked after us and the scenery and the variety of fish was fantastic. The deserted beach which they found for us was the ideal setting for the wonderful lunch provided by Pauline. We cannot reccommend Hurricane Divers highly enough...More

We had little to do except relax. Wake up. See the sunrise. Go for a nice relaxed run on the beach. Shower. Eat breakfast at one of the many restaurants on the beach. Go back to room, slather on sunscreen. Chat and chill on the hammocks on the balcony in front of our room. Be glad for our ocean view and the roar of the waves. Read on the beach. Jump around in the water when it's too hot. It's lunchtime. Ponder lunch. Sip watermelon juice and laugh, maybe order a pina colada or two and play a version of Drunk Mexican Scrabble. Back on the beach. Swim. Read. Talk. Laugh. Head for the hammocks in the shade if it's too hot. Buy hibiscus juice. Head upstairs for a shower before the sunset. Over to Posada Mexico for pina coladas and tapas. And then where is dinner? The sun sets beautifully over the rocks. Get dinner. Relax. Walk around in the streets, scanning the goods vendors have, trying not to bump into other diners and strollers. Up to the room. The roar of the ocean while reading before bed. And sleep. And let's do it again tomorrow. In a town of pure beauty and chill and guacamole...it's a great place to be.
