Where is Huatulco ?

Huatulco (Pronounced wha-tool-co) is a tourist resort town Mexico. located in the state of Oaxaca on the Pacific coast . The name “Bahias de Huatulco” comes from the nine bays surrounding the town, but the name got shortened to Huatulco. Huatulco has many luxury hotels and villas developed recently for the growing tourism in the area so most are relatively new and still quiet during the busy periods, with many based around the Tangolunda Bay.

Where is Huatulco located ?

It is located in the state of Oaxaca at the foothills of the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains  500 km south of Acapulco The official population is given as 50 000.

Bahias de Huatulco has four main districts. Tangolunda, which has many luxury resorts, Santa Cruz, which is a small town with a marina and Santa Cruz beach, La Crucecita which, is another small town just inland from the beach which provides support services to the main resorts in the area, and Chahué an area between Santa Cruz and Tangolunda.

The Bahias de Huatulco, (Bays of Huatulco) are made up of nine bays and numerous small coves stretching 26 kilometers along the coastline, with 36 white sandy beaches.

Where is Huatulco main town ?

The centre of commercial and tourist activities is Santa Cruz which has a large pier for the cruise ships to dock. Many activities can be had like snorkeling, deep sea fishing and jet ski for rent. Lots of weddings take place in Capilla de Santa Cruz next to the sea. the beaches at Santa Cruz are some of the best with soft white sands and turquoise blue water.

Tangolunda and Bahía Conejos are the more developed areas of Huatulco with most of the larger hotels located here.  The beaches of Barra de la Cruz and Playa Mojon offer great surf waves.

West of Santa Cruz, there are less developed beaches as most of this area is protected eco environment for many species of coral and marine life.

What to do in Huatulco

There are many things to do in Huatulco during the day and night with many fabulous restaurants and some nightlife although it is quieter than the more busier resorts like cancun or puerta vallarta . During the day you can do lots of beach and sporting activities as well as fishing or you can visit a coffee plantation and take a tour at places like Finca (farm) Las Nieves or Finca Monte Carlos.There is also a main festival organised every year that highlights issues to do with the environment with lots of music and cultural events taking place.

CAMPAIGN SALVEMOS PUERTO IN BRAZIL

The global campaign SALVEMOS PUERTO besides mobilizing people to rebuild the city, also mobilized people to awaken the spirit of solidarity and for the awakening of dozens of young athletes in Brazil.
The School of Environmental Bodyboarding is a project that teaches social and environmental Bodyboard free for more than 50 youth. It is located in the state of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil, where big names of the sport emerged as Neymara Carvalho, Lucas Nogueira and Magno Oliveira.
Aiming to help rebuild the town of Puerto Escondido and awaken the desire of the students to surf the perfect waves of Zicatela, the coordinator of the school, the athlete Rino de Souza, invited the group of volunteers VALE (Group VALE employees who perform voluntary actions) to participate in this campaign by purchasing the amount of shirts, necessary to standardize all students of the school. Within a week of release, nearly two thousand dollars were donated to buy all the shirts needed.
The delivery of the shirts happened at the company VALE on August 18, where the athlete TOP of the World Tour, Magno Oliveira, represented the IBA delivering the shirts the students and their teachers.
The school was founded in 2005 and since its activities are directed and taught by volunteers: Ana Elisa, Gabriel Scapin, Lucas Nogueira, Michael Cordeiro, Rafael Fernandes and Rino de Souza, who are dedicated to teaching the sport beyond notions of citizenship and environmental preservation.

CAMPANHA SALVEMOS PUERTO NO BRASIL

A campanha mundial SALVEMOS PUERTO além de mobilizar pessoas para a reconstrução da cidade, também mobilizou pessoas para o despertar do espírito solidário e para o despertar de dezenas de jovens atletas no Brasil.
A Escola Ambiental de Bodyboarding é um projeto social e ambiental que ensina gratuitamente o Bodyboard para mais de 50 jovens. Está localizada no estado do Espírito Santo, região sudeste do Brasil, de onde surgiram grandes nomes do esporte como: Neymara Carvalho, Lucas Nogueira e Magno Oliveira.
Com o objetivo em ajudar a reconstruir a cidade de Puerto Escondido e de despertar o desejo dos alunos da escola em surfar as perfeitas ondas de Zicatela, que o coordenador da escola, o atleta Rino de Souza, convidou o grupo de Voluntários VALE (Grupo de empregados da VALE que realizam ações voluntárias) a participarem desta campanha comprando a quantidade de camisas, necessária para uniformizar todos os alunos da escola. Em uma semana de divulgação, quase dois mil dollares foram doados para comprar todas as camisas necessárias.
A entrega das camisas aconteceu nas instalações da empresa VALE no dia 18 de agosto, onde o atleta TOP do Circuito Mundial, Magno Oliveira, representou a IBA entregando as camisas aos alunos e seus professores.
A escola surgiu em 2005 e desde então é coordenada pelos atletas Lucas Nogueira e Rino de Souza que contam com o apoio voluntário de mais 04 integrantes, que se dedicam em ensinar noções do esporte além de cidadania e preservação ambiental.

Lately it has been a wild ride over at Felipe Zapata’s  (a pen name of course) Blog, The Unseen Moon. Ol’ Felipe casts fate and all semblance of proper social behavior down the rabbit hole with his political and social rants.

I write “proper social behavior” tongue in cheek by the way. Our Blogs are editorial in nature – so opinions abound.

Felipe is a fine writer who I know annoys many of his ardent followers that read for his grace, finesse and clever yarns rather than his political and social views.

Like Felipe we are not afraid to speak our mind – political or otherwise – here. If you have visited more than a few times you know I am a tree hugging, libertarian (note the small “L”), humanitarian, and vegetarian with a lot to say on those subjects and living life large in Mexico.

Fortunately Felipe and I share close quarters in our political thinking – although he is slightly more conservative and  less idealistic and optimistic. In fairness he is more of a realist than me.

I write fortunately because he a tough and erudite  debater brimming with logic (most of the time); he chews and spits out many a commenter; and he bans those that grate on him with impunity, which does not happen here.

In yesterday’s Xalapa, Veracruz newspaper, The Diario Xalapa,  there was a poll taken throughout the day. We screen captured it early on and then checked again this morning to compare how it changed as the number of votes grew.

 

Translation: Do you think that America faces one of the most important elections in its history?

Some interesting things to note: Little change as the vote count grew supporting the fact that many of these polls taken are but a few folk’s votes – like – “we took a poll of 1600 people and Mitt Romney blah blah….”  Apparently they are pretty sure some small number just over a thousand or two thousand or so people will well represent the opinions of all (plus or minus 3%). Here we see that this theory seems to be supported.

Then there is the fact that the major percentages of voters were pretty much split down the middle. Also not surprising these days, where most elections are usually decided by just a few percentage points – a sign of the times we think.

Last point of interest is the fact that one out of five Mexican nationals could care less about the U.S. presidential race. We suspect that percentage would be higher if U.S. folks were polled on their interest in the Mexican race for president.

“ Where to stay ”

We were in PE 4 yrs ago and loved it. We stayed in Villas Carazalillo and would love to go back , but it's not really in our budget anymore. We're thinking about maybe staying on Zicatela this time. Does anyone have a nice, clean place they could recommend? It doesn't have to be on Zicatela but we would really like to have a pool and a ocean veiw room.

Hotel San Juan. It's just down from El Crucero, big bright pink place. They have a pool and an ocean view from the top balcony.

There are a few other places on Zicatela that I don't have any experience with but those two other places I have been to. I've also stayed many times at Villas Carrizalillo many times.

Check the hotel listings on tripadvisor. You'll likely get a lot more reviews for each hotel, than responses on this forum, rankings, and often much more detailed answers than most are likely provide here. Check for A/C of course.
