Puerto Escondido

Hi! I was thinking about flying to Mexico City this november and then taking a bus to Puerto Escondido. I am looking for a very simple place for me to kick back, relax and be a beach bum for a few months. I know this is a surfer town, but thats about all I know. Any advice? cheap places to stay? thoughts about the place? Warnings? I am a 21 year old canadian girl.

I've stayed often in Puerto Escondido but never got the chance to stay at the HostalMayflower----the one time I tried, they were fully booked. I have the idea that it is very cheap (their site does not give rates, I believe) and it is right on the road prohibited to cars that parallels the main beach----right in the center of the main part of PE.

If you are a 21 year old girl traveling alone, just make sure you take the normal precautions you would in any other part of the world. But chances are the most dangereous thing you will see in PE are the massive waves on the main beach.

I've stayed at the Mayflower in their dorm rooms a few times. Prices were approx 15 CAD last time I was there (Jan 2007). It has a great location close to the main beach, and not far from most of the bus stations clustered just north of el crucero. Its run by a friendly German-speaking woman who also lived in Ottawa, Canada for a while. If you're staying several months, you might save money by finding an apt for rent; check at the tourist office. Things to do: surf, swim, snorkel, sleep, hike, eat, drink, travel to nearby nature reserves and beaches, but mostly do nothing. 

Rblakney is right about the waves; be careful when you go in the water. Each beach has its own character. Say hello to the lifeguards or bring a buddy with you when you go swimming.

You can also stay cheaply on Zicatela, head up any street off the main drag. The street heading up to the highway nesr Mexpipe has a few nice, cheap places to stay. There a few strange characters wandering around, but most are harmless. Also a lot of older Canadians. If Puerto is too crowded for your tastes head down to Mazunte/ziolite, which is a much younger crowd. November is Fiestas de Noviembre, surf and fishing contests, really a lot of fun

Hi assunta.

Zipolite would be perfect for you. Yes, Zipolite, just as Puerto Escondido is a surfer beach....Playa Zipolite is also a budget, backpackers, off the beaten path, cheap, naturist, hippie, yoga, sun lovers, sand lovers, seafood lovers, paradise. Located about in the middle of Puerto Escondido to the west, and Huatulco to the east.

I recommend a good place to start your 1st night or 2, would be at Lyoban Hostel. SAFE, and a lot of just wonderful people run Lyoban. All of the taxi's caught in Pochutla know Lyoban. Lyoban sits right next door to the only church, on the only road that passes through Zipolite, located in old downtown Zipolite. From Lyoban you can check out the area and explore ... or mayby stay. Right now during LOW season a 2nd floor (secure too) hammock starts at 70 peso's, (less than $7 US per night).

ZIPOLITE HISTORY

A long, long time ago this beach was visited by the Zapotecans who made it a magical place. They used to come for meditation or resting. 

Recently in the 60´s this beach was rediscovered by young people from all the world recognized as "hippies", who found in this magical place a great charm for living together with the natives. It was a new touristic concept. Lots of foreigners including Italians, French, Germans, and people from other countries made Zipolite their home.

Here we have a strong interest in living in touch with nature and the rustic life, far from the modern world with its complications and comforts. Here there is an open minded life style that minimizes the culture differences, languages, beliefs, etc., of the various people.

The town is a collection of houses that offer services, restaurants, bars, discos, shops, and other features for visitors, where you can have very special adventure. 

ZIPOLITE is a beach and an experience that any young person can´t miss!

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, scruffy gringos, and lots of dope.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the noode beach, the drug scene, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget backpacker surfer off the beaten path Mexico beyond information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

In a snug little bay on the southern coast of Oaxaca, half-way between Puerto Escondido and Huatulco, this humble fishing village of 8,000 has long been a destination for backpackers en route to and from San Cristóbal, the Yucatán, and Guatemala. At Playa Zipolite, a mile north of town, you'll find the only quasi-sanctioned nude beach in Mexico, Playa Nudista (also called Playa de los Muertos, or Dead Men's Beach, for its ferocious undertow). The beach is ideal for a lazy stroll, vigorous bodysurfing, hammock-induced alpha-wave lounging, and a meal of red snapper fried in garlic at Zipolite's.
Stay right on the beach at one of the no-name hammock-cabaña places (about $5 per day), or head back over the hill to Posada de Cañón de Vata (doubles, about $35; Box 74, Pochutla, Oaxaca 70900), a hideaway tucked inside a dense, semitropical forest of teak, mahogany, ebony, and mango. There's no phone or street address, but Puerto Ángel is so small you can find it easily—it's about 100 yards from Playa del Panteón (Graveyard Beach), the town's main beach.

For a break from town, take the half-mile cab ride south to Club Playa Estacahuite, a small palapa bar/restaurant perched on a rocky point that looks south toward the bays of Huatulco. There's great snorkeling just off the exposed coast here: swim around with sea tortoises, barracuda, and moray eels.

Playa Zipolite is a tiny lazy beach town, off the beaten path, with enough cafés, convenience stores, restaurants, bars, and lodging to be hospitable to travelers. It is also Mexico’s only officially sanctioned nude beach, though I hadn’t heard that in advance (and didn’t even really notice it until I had been on the beach for a couple of hours). One doesn’t stumble across Zipolite; one has to intend to get there. I had heard some good things about Zipolite from a guy I’d met in Puerto Escondido, and after making a day trip to check it out, decided to come back and set up camp for a little while.

The vibe of the town is both very local and very international bohemian. No one wears anything more complicated than sarongs, swimsuits and shorts (if they’re wearing anything at all); in fact, it’s almost a hassle to put flip-flops on. The nude beach aspect is very secondary to the character of the town. Only about 10 to 20 percent of the people on the beach are fully nude; there are topless women as well. So, whatever you care to wear or not wear is fine with everyone. Most services are available (internet, laundry) but there are no ATMs here … that is a short colectivo or taxi ride to neighboring Puerto Angel.

The nearby rehab center and school for the disabled, Piña Palmera, is a big part of the town, and you see more than the average number of people on wheelchairs. In fact, I am sitting at a waterfront cafe watching a guy who arrived at the beach in a wheelchair with boogie board in tow …he’s out there now boogie boarding with a surfer buddy of his.

Zipolite has a number of ex-pats … the woman who turned me on to my hotel, for instance, is from California and runs a great café. I think the people who own the local cinema are also ex-pats. I heard you can smoke a joint there while watching a movie (from someone who would definitely know) but can’t confirm that firsthand. But, it’s mostly a local town. English is spoken here … quite well by the high-end resorts, like Nude, and many locals have some knowledge of English. However, a few Spanish words and phrases will get you far in the locals’ estimation.

It’s my third day here, and I like it enough that I just paid for Internet access for a month, which is how I am able to update this blog from a lovely vantage point on the sand. All the beach chairs and hammocks along the waterline are so inviting at any time of the day or early evening, and I have to force myself now to sit at a table … it’s hard to be productive in paradise.

To get to Zipolite from Puerto Escondido (all prices mentioned are as of March 2011) :

Take either a local bus (drop-off is the triangular bus stop diagonally across from the ADO bus station in downtown Puerto Escondido) or a luxury bus (at the ADO station). Local was 23 pesos and I didn’t bother looking into luxury prices because the local buses are fine. You could also rent a private taxi, though I didn’t look into that either. Ask the bus driver to alert you when you get to the Zipolite drop-off.

The drop-off is at a corner of the highway with an OXXO convenience store. Across the street from OXXO is a stand for private taxis, which will charge from 70-120 pesos to get to Zipolite, depending on how good your negotiating skills are. About a hundred paces down the road, at the rear of the convenience store, is the stop for a colectivo, a covered pickup truck/ public bus that charges 10 pesos to get to Zipolite, the last stop on the route. It is about a 20-30 minute ride.

If you take a colectivo, you will be dropped off in front of the Piña Palmera rehab center and school for the disabled. It is a five-minute walk down this street to the beach and town center.

To look at some before and after pictures Click Here.   Zipolite The origin of the name Zipolite, which is sometimes spelled Sipolite or Cipolite, is uncertain but may have come from the Nahuatl word sipolitlan or zipotli, which means bumpy place or place of continuous bumps or hills. This certainly described the topography of the region (and some of the roads as well). Another source reports that the meaning of Zipolite in the Nahuatl language is the beach of the dead or playa de los muertos because of the dangerous ocean currents. Archaeological work done on the east end of the beach tells us that Zipolite has a long history. But for the period up until 1955, only one family lived here. A shortage of small change can be a problem in Zipolite. It is suggested that you spend your larger bills at establishments that can make change so that you will have small change for street vendors, the ice cream man, etc. Zipolite does not have a bank but I believe there is a money exchange.
