A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Zipolite, near Puerto Angel, in the State of Oaxaca is a free and easy beach destination where many tourists go to relax. We slept in our hammocks on the edge of the beach, whilst others baked naked on the beach, played volleyball and generally spent the day relaxing.

Zipolite, near Puerto Angel, in the State of Oaxaca is a free and easy beach destination where many tourists go to relax. We slept in our hammocks on the edge of the beach, whilst others baked naked on the beach, played volleyball and generally spent the day relaxing.
About eight weeks before our visit a devastating cyclone ripped through the area and destroyed a lot of the buildings along the coast. A lot of trees had been blown over in the process and parts of buildings disappeared. This fortunately didn't affect our stay on the beach, although it did make for a hairy journey in and out of Zipolite.  The mountain roads had suffered major landslide damage.

We did not arrive in Puerto Angel until 11pm and couldn't find suitable accommodation there. We then drove to Zipolite and hammocked for the night. That place however, didn't have working toilets so we moved to some Palapas on the beach where we hung our hammocks.
Our first night's accommodation
Cars and sand don't mixWhilst trying to find a place to stay, we were told by a local proprietor to drive onto his land to inspect his property. Unfortunately, the land was part of the beach, and his invitation lead to several hours of anguish. Unfortunately, we became bogged in the sand in a place where it was not possible to be dragged out as there was a palm tree between the car and the road.
It was interesting to see the interaction between the different cultures regarding problem solving. The Mexicans wanted to use their muscle and to lift the car out, our group wanted to steer forwards and backwards to get out, whilst the German tourists nearby wanted to build a bridge. In the end the bridge idea succeeded. It certainly made for an interesting afternoon.
Activities : Fishing & DolphinsFrom Puerto Angel we went fishing with a local fisherman and caught about ten tuna-like fish which we cooked up for dinner. We tried to catch some large sword fish which we had seen caught by other fisherman on the day, however unfortunately our efforts proved fruitless.
Whilst fishing however, we continuously saw dolphins and turtles. The dolphins were not like those that are in Australia. They were dark grey, almost black and were covered in white speckles. Seeing the many dolphins was more enjoyable than the fishing for the girls but the guys enjoyed hauling in the catch.

VolleyballThe volleyball freak (Andrew) played several games of volleyball on the beach during our stay at Zipolite. We developed a friendly rivalry between a Mexican rock band that we met.

I decided to have my hair plated and beaded (after a lot of encouragement from Linda and Kirsten (who also had hers done)). This took about one and a half hours, the young Mexican lady was extremely fast in her technique and whilst she was working, the members of our group took turns in getting clucky over the lady's little baby.

WarningSome advice regarding beach hammocks : make sure not to leave anything out (that is not attached to your body). Our sandals were stolen from under our hammock at 3am when we were sleeping. Our group's cooler filled with food and alcohol was also stolen from the beach. Note that this should not deter people from visiting beaches like Zipolite. Unfortunately it is a fact that whenever tourists are around thieves will be also.

The 5 Most Dangerous Beaches in The World

The 5 most dangerous beaches in the world
At other times we’ve told you of the best beaches for surfing and also the world’s most beautiful beaches, and both times we show you places to appreciate the freshness and the waves of the sea in a tropical paradise.
Today’s proposal is different because you talk about the 5 most dangerous beaches in the world, so rather than encourage you to visit and enjoy a refreshing swim there, I advise that you look from as far away as possible. As the sirens with which Ulysses crossed according to Greek mythology. These beaches are beautiful and tempting, but succumb to the temptation to go with them can be fatal, and tell you why.
New Smyrna (Florida, USA)
This was the highest number of shark attacks for no apparent reason. I think this is already a clear indication of why you should not dive into the waters of Smyrna. However, it is true that sharks are closer than usual at this beach, statistics affects the huge number of tourists visiting New Smyrna. Also (in case anyone finds it mitigating), most of these attacks are not fatal.
Beaches north and east of Australia
We’re on a beach with fewer sharks before, but much more abundant in other animal: the jellyfish (or jellyfish) in Australia. I know we all bathed in sea with jellyfish sting once and its no big deal, but these jellyfish are somewhat different … None other than one of the most poisonous animal in the world. They are almost invisible.
Beaches north and east of Australia
Boa Viagem (Brazil)
The beaches of Brazil, the most beautiful “do mundo”, they are also accompanied by one of the best climates for vacation, also have their drawbacks … The Boa Viagem, for example, is home to sharks, very angry with the humans who destroy their natural habitat, and often decide to retaliate, especially in the estuary area of ??the beach.
Hanakapiai (Hawaii)
The fact that the danger of Hanakapiai are neither sharks or other sea creature does not decrease the number of people who die here. Strong currents have claimed a few lives, so it is a beautiful beach to watch and play.
Zipolite (Mexico)
Another beauty that is best appreciated from afar … His treacherous currents make it called “the beach of the dead”, and unless you can not suppress the desire to die, or consider dive here in the days after the full moon.
Zipolite, Mexico
5 beauties, landscapes 5, 5 and 5 tourist spots where they do not defy nature …

Yeah, that incident may be "out of time," but it did occur in Puerto, in the late 80's, as best I can recall. Probably between 1986 and 1990. I wasn't here for the occasion, and relied on accounts from a friend of mine who was here when that swell hit.

According to him, a big wave bodysurfer himself, the swell hit as described, and Foo and Bradshaw were in Puerto for it. I agree that surf forecasts in those days were sketchy at best, but my friend gave me an honest account of what happened, because he was really excited about having hit Puerto on such a big swell, with such illustrous surfing companions. (They were both well-known and famous at the time.) And he's not the kind of guy who BS'ed about surf.

I also took a little "literary license" with that incident, because either Bradshaw or Foo was sick with an apparent case of "tourista," and did not go out (I think that was Bradshaw) but that the other (Foo) did go out. The swell was big, as described, 25-30 foot faces with 25-foot lefts peeling off Marinero, running all the way to the inside of the Bay, and closing out at 8-foot where the creek hits the Bay.

Good observations, but I'm sure my friend will attest it occurred pretty much as described.
