A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Ceviche

Ceviche

One of the more recognizable Latin American seafood dishes. The freshest of seafood makes this dish phenomonal. Fresh seafood is everywhere here, but one of the best places to try it was at one of the small food shacks at Estacahuitle Bay. The families here go out to fish for there own product for the restaurant. That kind of work, make this dish a lot more special.

Estacahuitle Bay

Estacahuitle Bay

The most beautiful bay on the riviera because of its turquoise waters and gentle waves. The beaches are small on this bay but its still a local secret so you wont encounter much tourists. It's only a little further up from Puerto Angel so you can enjoy both in the same day. The town of Puerto Angel I found very dirty and I was warned that there is alot of dumping into the shores and not advised to swim here. Estacahuitle is also a great place to snorkel, one of the restaurants there can rent you equipment and even take you out on a boat to some further spots.

The view from the hammock

San Agustinillo

San Agustinillo is the perfect family beach. No nudity, calm ocean waters, and rows of restaurants. However, the price of everything here is higher than most beaches on the Riveria Oaxaqueña. There are many choices so you can find a good place. Mexico Lindo is a nice restaurant to enjoy reasonable prices and access to lounge chairs. It also has hammocks for siestas which I find a must after swimming and eating. San Agustinillo is next to Mazunte, and a short ride from Zipolite. Private taxis from Zipolite are 50 MXN$, or there always collectivos from the main road.

Ventanilla

Ventanilla

The beach is named after a formation that has shaped out a small window along the coast. The beach is very interesting because of the large amounts of minerals it's shores contain. The amount of minerals changes the sand to a metallic grey and heats it up another 20 degrees, so bring sandals. The beach, unlike the other towns, is not what actually brings tourists here. The real attraction is the wild life of it's mangroves. There are two types of tours available here. One is the government sanctioned group (recognizable by white t-shirts) that will take you to a small zoo and a mangrove tour for 100 MXN$. The other is a community organized group (in red t-shirts) that will take you only through the mangroves for 50 MXN$. I took the latter because I was told the zoo was nothing special. It includes a small orientation about the town and the beaches before heading out. The whole tour lasts about an hour and a half. The tour of the mangroves allows you to see crocodiles, fish, pelicans, swans, and iguanas as well as several unique plants. I recommend bringing a hat and sunscreen because it is not very shady and the sun can get uncomfortable. There are restaurants available here to go for lunch after.

New airline routes, new bus routes and a new hotel brand are among travel stories this week in Mexico.
The Canadian airline WestJet will begin service between Toronto and the cities of Huatulco in Oaxaca, Mérida in Yucatán and San José del Cabo in Baja California Sur during the winter of 2015-2016.
The Huatulco flights will begin operating December 13 and run twice a week, the weekly Mérida flights begin December 15 and San José flights will operate twice a week, also beginning December 15.
The airline has also announced a new Calgary-Huatulco connection; it will begin December 12 and operate twice a week.
Closer to the ground, Greyhound, the largest inter-city bus service in the United States, has become the first such company to begin offering domestic service in Mexico.
It is operating in the north of the country, connecting Monterrey, Nuevo León, with Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, with 13 departures a day. Another 10 departures daily will link Monterrey with stops in Texas on a Monterrey-Nuevo Laredo-Laredo-San Antonio-Austin-Dallas route.
The bus company has new terminals in both Monterrey and Nuevo Laredo, offering free WiFi and charging stations for electronic devices. New buses offer three-point seat belts, free WiFi, power outlets, leather seats, guaranteed seating and extra leg room.
In hotel news, Conrad Hotels & Resorts will open its first hotel in Mexico next year, a 135-room luxury property in San Luis Potosí. Conrad is owned by Hilton Worldwide, which opened a Hilton hotel in the same city in April.
The nine-story Conrad hotel is scheduled to open next year, and will be located near the city’s convention center.
