A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Weather should be dry and hot. It will be busy around Easter (Easter Sunday is April 8th in 2012) otherwise relatively quiet. There have been reports of robberies on the beach (usually in isolated sections and after dark) but otherwise nothing to worry about. Aeromar and Vivaaerobus fly into Puerto Escondido from Mexico City but it is usually not that cheap. An alternative is to fly into Huatulco that has more flight options from Mexico City and also an international connection from Houston on Continental. (It's then about an hour by taxi to P.E.)

A cheaper alternative is luxury bus from Mexico City (takes around 12 hours).

I can't speak on the weather in April but the area is one of my favourites in Mexico. If you only have 1 week then I would probably spend it in PE and you could do a day trip to San Augustanillo, one of the most beautiful beaches I have seen.

When in PE you should do a tour of the lagoon[I forget the name}. If Gina is still in the info booth she can help you but do not take the trip with the Canadian Ornithologist as when I have seen them they go really fast.We did it on 2 occasions with a Mexicain guide in a small boat and it was truly wonderful.
You can fly into PE or to Huatulco but for a 1 week trip I would hit PE.However I don't know where you are coming from. Most domestic flights in Mexico come from Mexico City however you might get a charter flight to Huatulco and then bus up to PE...........maybe more info for us so we can help you.........................................

Laguna Chacahua may be the place tanglefoot is thinking of. Checkhttp://www.tomzap.com for general, if dated, information about this place. I recommend it too. And Gina is very helpful.
