How to Travel From Mexico City to Puerto Escondido

A bus is the cheapest and most convenient way to travel in Mexico.

The coastline of Oaxaca, the southern Mexican province where you can find the seaside town of Puerto Escondido, was more difficult to travel to a generation ago. In the past 20 years, new infrastructure has appeared on the Oaxacan coast in the form of airports and highways as the resort town of Huatulco and the surrounding towns grow. It is easier than ever to travel from the heart of modern Mexico to what remains a rustic and underdeveloped coastline. There are virtually no passenger trains left in Mexico, but tour bus companies have popped up to fill the gap, with even the most upscale companies offering frequent travel times and economical prices.

Items you will need

• Proper identification (this includes your passport and traveler or work visa)
• Spanish phrasebook (optional, depending on your knowledge of Spanish, as little English is spoken in Oaxaca).
• Book, MP3 player or laptop (the trip will take 17 to 20 hours, depending on the bus line)
• Motion-sickness medicine, if needed, depending on your propensity for travel sickness, as the road winds through the southern foothills of the Sierra Madres)

Choosing your Bus Line

Use your North American credit card to buy and reserve tickets through a website called Ticket Bus. All of the major Mexican bus lines have their schedules posted on this popular and frequently used website. Peruse the schedules of all the major Mexican bus lines using this site, but because you are traveling south to Oaxaca you will be likely be choosing between ADO, OCC or SUR.

For the ADO or OCC bus lines (executive, first and second class) reserve your place at least a few days in advance either in person at the station (if possible) or online using a credit card. When traveling on one of the first class lines, you will have access to such amenities as free Wi-Fi, seats that fully recline, a movie and even meals served at your seat. These routes are popular, especially for overnight trips. Choose an upscale bus line if you would prefer to travel very comfortably.

Traveling on a third class bus is an option for the more adventurous traveler, or someone on a budget or with little time to plan. It is easier to buy your ticket closer to your departure time, because these inexpensive and frequent buses rarely fill up. These buses have their local charm, because you will likely be sharing your seat with a commuter or student, but also make frequent stops, and do not offer entertainment in the form of movies or Internet; they tend to offer a bumpy, less comfortable ride.

Tips

• With an relatively new and small but still bustling international airport in the nearby city of Huatulco, it is possible to catch a short flight to the Playa Chica ("Little Beach," a common local nickname for the coastline between Salina Cruz and Puerto Escondido) from Mexico City and then to travel by car, boat or bus to nearby Puerto Escondido. Puerto also has a small airport that hosts a few national airlines. If you are short on time or would prefer not to brave the winding roads along the Sierra Madres or the Playa Chica (not for the faint of heart or the weak of stomach) this might be the preferable option.

Warning

• Carry your passport and your visa with you at all times, and have them readily available for inspection. It is not uncommon to find army checkpoints set up in commonly traveled stretches of highway to search passing vehicles for contraband weapons or illegal drugs. Tourists must be able to identify themselves with official documents to avoid suspicion of being a smuggler or illegal immigrant. The fairly recent additions of new highways and improvements to existing ones have made driving easier, but it remains precarious due to occasional labor unrest or highway crime. Labor unrest can also result in road closures. Driving from Mexico City to Puerto Escondido is only recommended to those very familiar with the area.

Some events are being planned for Puerto Escondido in November with the intention of protecting and maintaining cultural traditions.
Day of the Dead events will be held in conjunction with the Fiestas de Noviembre in Plaza Marlin, in front of the Hotel Ines, at Playa Zicatela on November 1 and 2. According to information supplied by the Hotel Arcoiris, there will be a competition of altars, another for costumes, a greased pole competition and burro races. Prizes will be awarded to the best altars.
In addition several events are planned for November 2:
• At 7 pm there will be a brief explanation of the Mictlán.
• At 7:15 a Mictlantecutli ceremony will be presented, with dance of the Mexicas.

• At 8 pm musician Oscar Hernández will give a concert of prehispanic instruments, Hacia el Mictlán.
Organizers of the Days of the Dead invite everyone to attend, participate and enjoy the activities on both days starting at 5 pm. Admission is free.

However you slice it there is a little Mexican in me.

A Little Mexican in Me (and maybe even a little bull 

More than a decade ago we formulated a desire to live in Mexico. Those were rose colored glasses aspirations. All we could see was more freedom and less cost – little else was considered or mattered.

What we soon discovered about the land and people of Mexico, the world around that, and the heart that beats within, is a fascinating, sometimes raucous story; eventually it became personal to us – Mexico bared its soul.

For example:

Last Friday a couple of hombres were making arrangements to retrieve a motor-home from our Rancho del Cielo property. The Dodge motor-home came with the house, as did a long story we will not get into. Friday turned into Saturday which is indeed one of those Mexican characteristics.

Anita had already made it clear she was not going along. These kinds of maneuvers make her quite nervous. She just did not want to be there.

Unexpectedly the guys showed up. I rode the scooter 3.5 miles to the base of the mountain which happens to be the Xico cemetery. Then transferred to one of their vehicles to trek the 2 miles up to the Rancho on a road barely serviceable for burros and horses.

A Long and Winding Road to our Rancho

The reason for the meet-up was based on my not wanting to drive through the town of Xico and on to Ursulo Galvan in a caravan that included an old gringo motor-home being towed sans license plates and documentation. These hombres gave every indication that rules and laws were not something that concerned them – but a white-boy in the mix might have just been that extra attraction to tip (off) the scales of justice.

We had been told a tow truck was going to climb the mountain and cart the motorhome down.

Even before we took possession of the Rancho some six years ago, we had learned the brakes were faulty on the motor-home. It had been there at rest under a substantial carport now for about 8 years. You might imagine how reticent we were to be involved in moving that thing down that treacherous path they euphemistically call a camino. But, also how very happy we would be to gain that carport parking space.

Wisely the motor-home was resting on blocks to preserve the tires (and that worked by the way). I offered the use of my 2.5 ton floor jack imagining that the boys might have the barest of equipment even with a tow truck in tow. How right that thought turned out to be.

A Ford Expedition, a rather beat pick-up truck, four hombres, three women and I arrived at the Rancho. I wondered where the tow truck was.

The hombres proceed to back the beater pickup truck in place to connect a chain to the motorhome. Shocked I ask if they were planning to haul the huge motor-home down the hill with that puny ½ ton pickup? Si!

Here is where the division of thinking; the alternative realities of a mostly practical guy from Americka and four relatively young hombres reached a huge gap. What had I got myself involved in?

The only thing I knew at that moment was:

1. Once that motorhome was past our Rancho gate and planted on the camino,  I wash my hands of it all – FOB just beyond the Rancho entrance – we were done.
2. I was to be headed back to my scooter in front of this effort.  Get out of Dodge and away from that Dodge motor-home as quickly as possible.

The hombres were in great spirits, having a good laugh at my expense seeing my look and response to their plan. Funny nervioso gringo.

We removed the blocks. The six tires supporting the large motor-home needed air. I dragged out my air compressor and a shiny new tow chain with hooks (theirs had no ends and was quite questionable).

The motor-home would not budge. They rocked their vehicle back and forth, finally allowing slack and getting a running charge. Their truck groaned as the chain snapped taunt. The motor-home still did not budge.

They then attached chains to two vehicles adding the Expedition – I kid you not – still would not budge.

Things were looking dim for gaining back that carport parking space.

Someone produced a cell phone. A call was made. We were now waiting for – perhaps a tow truck for real?

Twenty minutes later, after a lot of jocular talk and laughter over my now very much concern, up the drive, comes a 10 yard diesel dump truck, a real behemoth.

The really large dump truck was quickly and to my thinking skillfully maneuvered into our driveway and in front of the motorhome.

Yes, it had the power to drag the motorhome from its resting place – tires kicking and screaming as the rear wheels followed reluctantly – without turning.

After a couple of brushes with cement carport pillars and a cement post at our gate, the motorhome had been dragged clear of the Rancho and rested in the roadway.

I looked backed at the large open space that was now our vacant carport and breathed a moment’s relief – until I started imaging this procession causing a road blockage that might draw attention by some officials.

The hombres realized, as if a light went off, that very soon all the rubber would wear off the back wheels as they still did not rotate, and that that was probably not going to work. They proceeded to attempt to remove the back dually wheels to try and free the frozen axle connected to the rear differential.

This is where one of the hombres, the three mujers and I left the scene. Now like Anita, I could no longer watch and needed to get to a place where I could only imagine what was going on.

A few hours later the entourage pulled up in the Hood. The dump truck deposited the motor-home, replete with freely moving back wheels, to a parking space in front of one very happy hombre’s casa. The entire family immediately commenced to cleaning the unit up.

The Eagle has Landed

I retrieved my jack and chain. The hombres were all smiles.

Would I have done something like this in my youth? Perhaps in the sixties when freedom was still available in the U.S. Today there is no way that vehicle could have been pulled by a huge dump truck through any U.S. streets without being stopped – no way. This not even taking into account the risks of getting that thing down the mountain.

At the end of the day I made some new friends. There were moments where we all were as one. But the reality is while there is now some Mexican in me, we will always be from different worlds.

We have been working feverishly to get packed and headed off to our winter quarters in Puerto Escondido. The end of that tunnel is in sight. It is no small task for a couple that easily get into a routine wherever we are parked. Look for us next time in Puerto Escondido. Stay Tuned!

“ Manzanillo vs Huatulco ? ”

Having been to Huatulco twice now and going again this February we are getting quite familiar with the area and love it but we are thinking of trying Manzanillo, MX. someday as well.

For anybody that has been to both places, how do they compare? Weather, water, beaches, resorts and the town itself.

I have heard that the areas are similar but I would like to hear from travellers whom have been to both destinations. Pro's and Con's would be nice to hear.

Manzanillo is not quite as hot as Huatulco but saying that, it is still very hot! Just like Huatulco is doesn't cool down in the evening and we have never had to put a sweater on. We went to Hautulco 3 yrs in a row and then to Manzanillo. This year will be our 3rd year in Manzanillo. The beaches are nice...Miramar beach is amazing we never saw a beach like that in Hautulco. The food is great, Manzanillo is the largest import/export docks/yards on the Pacific side of Mexico so all the foods are very fresh. The 2 towns of Salagua and Santiago are where the locals live, shop, work and if you walk into the town you will have the pleasure of meeting the wonderful people that live in the area. Keep in mind they don't all speak English but if you try to speak a few words they try to understand you as well. It is a truly Mexican experience much like shopping in La Crucecita but without all the souvenirs . Manzanillo was not built for tourism it is a working town where as Hutaulco was built for tourism. It feels very authentic & is very authentic Mexico. We stayed @ The Barcelo and The Dreams in Huatulco. This will be our 3rd year staying @ The Barcelo Karmina Palace and in our opinion the food is much better in Manzanillo then it was in Huatulco. I would definitely say give Manzanillo a try, we didn't think that we would ever find a place we liked as much as Huatulco, but we were mistaken and we are glad we tried Manzanillo.

ditto Huatulco was great but Manzanillo is great for different reasons the number one reason is there's a lot less tourists in zlo than Huatulco the result is a far more relaxing authentic vacation.

Huatulco for 2 years then Manzanillo for 2 years off to Punta DE mita this year never stop looking for the perfect vacation you never know where yours is :)

Further to comparisons ....

Having been to Mexico 11 times in the last 12 years we have tried all the big resort areas , Puerto Vallarta 6 times , Ixtapa, The Mayan , Huatulco twice and Manzanilo twice. Which is the best place , well no place is perfect but each has their own pros and cons depending on what you would call the ideal vacation.

Loved Puerto Vallarta 10 years ago but gradually it changed from a quiet place to a very busy place , good if you like tons of tours and night clubs but the amount of people visiting every year has grown so much that we found other places that were better , still nicest scenery , mountains and ocean and great beaches if you dont mind the crowds then its a great place to go.

Ixtapa is fantastic smaller better weather than Pvr but not as easy to get to from Canada ( direct flights) otherwise would go back in a heart beat .

Huatulco was terrific but if you like to spend a lot of time in the sun you actually can do it much more in Pvr and Manzanillo because its not as hot , say 35 degrees in Hutaulco compared to high twenties in Pvr and ZLO .mORE SUN = BETTER TAN if thats what you want .

Manzanillo is great less people , great weather not a real tourist trap still lots to do but no where near the variety of tours as in say PVR more like Huatulco , very quiet and relaxing .

The Mayan side was our least favourite we are partial to the Pacific side while the water there is the best the scenery and crazy airport ( Cancun) gets a thumbs down .

Going to try Punta De Mita 1 hour north of Pvr this year because the resoirt looks great and again for us it looks very quiet and small towns surround the area .

Nothing is perfect each has great benefits and some minor cons for us anyways .

look at it this way Mexico in Feb beats Wpg by a mile :)
