A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Huntington Beach, CA (PRWEB) September 12, 2012
It was announced today that Greg Long, from San Clemente California, widely considered one of the best watermen in the world, has won Surfline’s Wave of the Summer presented by Nike.
The Wave of the Summer event was a three-month quest for the single best ride at Puerto Escondido’s Playa Zicatela in Oaxaca, Mexico, a notorious bone crushing big wave beachbreak in Southern Mexico. Entrants from around the globe submitted video of waves ridden between June 1st and August 31st, 2012.
Submitted rides were then judged by a panel consisting of longtime Puerto Escondido surfer and big wave legend Peter Mel, iconic Zicatela surf photographer Ruben Pina, and two of Mexico’s most revered surf legends, Roger Ramirez and Roberto Salinas.
“Greg's winning wave was good size with good tube time and a nice, clean exit,” said Pina, adding, “Greg's left bomb was also spectacular.”
In addition to the single best ride a special Overall Performance Award presented by the State of Oaxaca Tourism and $5000 was given to Oscar Moncada for his consistent and aggressive pursuit of the best waves Puerto Escondido had to offer this year.
“It's exciting to celebrate such a unique Puerto season, as well as the participation by the world's best,” said Zach Boon, Nike North America Brand Manager. “The support of the local Oaxacan lifeguard association has been crucial to the success of the Wave of the Summer and we look forward to the future of working alongside the booming Mexican surfing community.”
Long and Moncada were presented with their awards in Puerto Escondido in front of an honorific crowd of Oaxacan surf legends and dignitaries. In addition to Long’s winning wave, this season he also caught what many believe to be the biggest wave ever paddled into at the break. Long, one of surfing’ finest dignitaries, accepted his award in Spanish.
“Puerto is one of the most amazing waves in the world and also one of the most dangerous,” said Long, 29 who has been coming to the Mexican Pipeline since he was a teenager. “It feels good to win, but I don’t come here to win money or get famous. I love the challenge and the feeling I get when I’m surfing out there.”
All Wave of the Summer entries can be viewed at Surfline http://www.surfline.com/surf-news/wave-of-the-summer/. All waves, in addition to Greg’s winning wave can be downloaded on Vimeo at https://vimeo.com/48921942.
Surfline would like to extend a special thank you to this year’s Wave of the Summer presented by Nike judges, Peter Mel, Ruben Pina, Roger Ramirez. We’d also like to thank Roberto Salinas as well as Adriano Davo, Edwin Morales and the Oaxacan Surfing Association. And, of course, we’d also like to thank Nike and the Oaxaca Tourism Board for their support of this special event.

Don't think you can avoid extra costs. I think Interjet charges less for extra luggage than AeroMexico.

Where is Huatulco

Where is Huatulco

Where is Huatulco

Where is Huatulco ?

Huatulco (Pronounced wha-tool-co) is a tourist resort town Mexico. located in the state of Oaxaca on the Pacific coast . The name “Bahias de Huatulco” comes from the nine bays surrounding the town, but the name got shortened to Huatulco. Huatulco has many luxury hotels and villas developed recently for the growing tourism in the area so most are relatively new and still quiet during the busy periods, with many based around the Tangolunda Bay.

Where is Huatulco located ?

It is located in the state of Oaxaca at the foothills of the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains  500 km south of Acapulco The official population is given as 50 000.
where is huatulco
Bahias de Huatulco has four main districts. Tangolunda, which has many luxury resorts, Santa Cruz, which is a small town with a marina and Santa Cruz beach, La Crucecita which, is another small town just inland from the beach which provides support services to the main resorts in the area, and Chahué an area between Santa Cruz and Tangolunda.

The Bahias de Huatulco, (Bays of Huatulco) are made up of nine bays and numerous small coves stretching 26 kilometers along the coastline, with 36 white sandy beaches.

Where is Huatulco main town ?

The centre of commercial and tourist activities is Santa Cruz which has a large pier for the cruise ships to dock. Many activities can be had like snorkeling, deep sea fishing and jet ski for rent. Lots of weddings take place in Capilla de Santa Cruz next to the sea. the beaches at Santa Cruz are some of the best with soft white sands and turquoise blue water.
Tangolunda and Bahía Conejos are the more developed areas of Huatulco with most of the larger hotels located here.  The beaches of Barra de la Cruz and Playa Mojon offer great surf waves.

Picture of surfer in Barra de la cruz

surfing at Barra de la Cruz
West of Santa Cruz, there are less developed beaches as most of this area is protected eco environment for many species of coral and marine life.

What to do in Huatulco

There are many things to do in Huatulco during the day and night with many fabulous restaurants and some nightlife although it is quieter than the more busier resorts like cancun or puerta vallarta . During the day you can do lots of beach and sporting activities as well as fishing or you can visit a coffee plantation and take a tour at places like Finca (farm) Las Nieves or Finca Monte Carlos. There is also a main festival organised every year that highlights issues to do with the environment with lots of music and cultural events taking place.
