Having fun at Zipolite, the nudist beach in San Pedro Pochutla, depends on a fine balance set by rules and mutual respect. But violating them can mean fines of up to 5,000 pesos (US $265).
Zipolite municipal agent David Rodríguez told Estado Actual that the local administration works jointly with tourist service providers to eradicate many inappropriate practices on the part of visitors.
The latter, he continued, must learn to respect the rules that exist in each place and establishment they go to.
In cases that ended in fines, said Rodríguez, offenders were always warned first to stop their behavior. The fine is only applied when the infringing actions continue.
Common infractions include showing up naked outside the beach and other nudist areas, having intercourse in public areas, or abusing drugs or alcoholic beverages.
Rodríguez stressed that the Zipolite nudist beach is not for sexual encounters, but for living an experience with nature, or living nudism as an experience of respect among mutuals and respect for sexual diversity.
As an example, he said, nudism on the beach is one thing, no one can tell you anything if you are naked on the beach, but problems start when you leave the designated area.
“There are places, establishments that allow nudism, such as the hotel Nude, but there are others that do not, and visitors must respect that, they must cover themselves in public areas such as parks, shops or other establishments,” said the municipal agent.
He recalled an incident a few months ago when there was a problem with a group of swingers who tried to have a private party on a public beach where large events are not allowed.
The organizers complained when their event was canceled, and authorities had to explain that while everyone can use the beach, rules set by the community assembly for healthy coexistence must be followed.
