A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .
Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before. Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.ivan

Big-wave surfer killed in truck-car collision
Internationally known surfer Óscar Moncada and two friends died on the weekend
Mexico News Daily | Monday, November 27, 2017
Renowned big-wave surfer Óscar Moncada died in hospital early yesterday from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle collision Saturday in his home state of Oaxaca. Two other occupants of the car he was traveling in were also killed.
Moncada, a native of Puerto Escondido —Mexico’s most famous big-wave destination— was 34.
The crash occurred on a section of federal highway 200 about 35 kilometers south of Puerto Escondido in the municipality of Santa María Tonameca. The Mercedes convertible in which the surfer and two of his friends were traveling was crushed when it collided with an Isuzu truck at around 4:00pm Saturday.
The car burst into flames following the collision while the truck overturned before coming to a halt across the two-lane highway, blocking traffic in both directions. The truck driver was also injured in the incident and taken to hospital in a serious condition.
The two other victims have been identified as Diego Oropeza, also a Puerto Escondido surfer, and tattoo artist Walter Rendón.
Municipal, state and federal police attended the scene of the accident along with firefighters from Puerto Escondido. Federal and state police are investigating the cause.
Moncada gained international fame for his skill at surfing the large waves at his home break at Zicatela Beach, nicknamed the Mexican Pipeline. He competed in big-wave surfing competitions around the world and was sponsored by the United States company Volcom.
The governing body for professional surfers, the World Surf League, described Moncada as “a big-wave legend” and said that he had been “a pillar of the Puerto Escondido surfing community for more than two decades.”
In July, he placed ninth in the Puerto Escondido Challenge and was currently ranked 19th on the Big Wave Tour. In 2006 he gained a wildcard into an elite championship tour event featuring the world’s best surfers.
News of the surfer’s death has further rattled the worldwide surfing community that was already reeling from the death of another pro-surfer, Brazilian Jean da Silva.
Just hours before he was killed, Moncada posted a heartfelt tribute and farewell to Silva, who is believed to have taken his own life.
Now, the tributes are flowing for Moncada, who apart from being a world-class big-wave surfer, was also a well-loved member of both the local and international surfing community.

National Geographic Traveler magazine has revealed its best-of list for where to go in 2018, including the 21 must-see destinations of the year divided into three categories.
"The number-one question we get from our 9.6 million readers is, 'Where should I go next?' Our Best of the World list responds to that question with 21 timely destinations that make for a year of transformative travels," said George Stone, National Geographic Traveler editor in chief.
The list is curated by the magazine’s global staff.
"With 15 international editions, National Geographic Traveler has a global team of writers, photographers and travel experts who helped build our list and report on these stellar places,” said Stone.
“We looked for cities that bustle with new energy and intrigue; parklands that percolate with vitality and ecological protection; and communities rich in local character that offer opportunities for cultural engagement. Packed with surprise, humor and relevance, our list advances our National Geographic mission to explore, conserve and share unforgettable stories about the best of our world,” Stone added.
National Geographic Traveler will focus on three Best of the World designations in its upcoming issue: Dublin, Ireland; Oaxaca, Mexico; and Oahu’s North Shore, Hawaii.
NatGeo calls Dublin “Europe’s largest village,” saying that the “intimate capital “exudes a friendly, village vibe.” Visitors can explore the city's pub culture, unique museums and historical sites scattered throughout.
Oaxaca, Mexico is on the list for its ancient art of natural dyeing, and visitors covet the region’s exquisite textiles. After a devastating earthquake, the magazine is encouraging travelers to support the Mexican town where visitors are more welcome than ever.

National Geographic is also encouraging visitors to experience the increasingly encroached-upon rural North Coast.
“Local farms, such as Poamoho and Kahuku, are helping (as the ubiquitous bumper stickers state) 'Keep the Country Country' by cultivating homegrown crops and agritourist experiences. Discover more about Oahu,” notes NatGeo.
The full list is divided into three categories: cities, culture and nature.
Cities include Dublin, Ireland; Malmo, Sweden; Phnom Penh, Cambodia; San Antonio, Texas; Santiago, Chile; Sydney, Australia; and Tbilisi, Georgia.
Top cultural destinations include Cleveland, Ohio; Friesland, Netherlands; Harar, Ethiopia; Labrador, Canada; Oaxaca, Mexico; Tetouan, Morocco; and Vienna, Austria.
Nature destinations to visit in 2018 include Albania; Jordan Trail, Jordan; Jujuy Province, Argentina; Madagascar; Oahu, Hawaii; Ruaha NP, Tanzania; and Seoraksan National Park, South Korea.
