A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca .— Zipolite is a name of Zapotec origin that is usually interpreted as “beach of the dead” , although an official tourist source of Oaxaca also includes another hypothesis: “place of the snails” .

The name belongs to one of the best-known beaches on the Oaxaca coast, located in the municipality of San Pedro Pochutla , between Puerto Ángel and Mazunte . Its history, ocean currents, and cultural identity help explain why the toponym is associated with death.

What does Zipolite mean?

The most widespread meaning of Zipolite is "beach of the dead" .

The Oaxaca Tourism Secretariat explains that the name comes from Zapotec and that, according to tradition, the region's ancient inhabitants brought their dead to this beach for burial. The same source records a second interpretation: "place of the snails . "

Therefore, the most rigorous answer is that Zipolite is usually translated as "beach of the dead", but there are other interpretations about the origin of the toponym .

Why does Zipolite mean “beach of the dead”?

The traditional explanation is related to the ancient funerary practices of the Zapotec people of the region. According to tourist information from the Oaxaca government , the Zapotecs would have transported their dead from distant places to this part of the coast for burial. This is believed to be the origin of the beach's name.

The name also acquired a symbolic dimension due to the characteristics of the sea. Zipolite has strong waves and currents that have historically posed a risk to those who enter the water.

Even documents from the Oaxaca Congress link the name "Playa de los muertos" (Beach of the Dead) both to the Zapotec tradition of the name and to the dangerous ocean currents that have marked the history of the beach.

Does Zipolite also mean “place of the snails”?

Yes. This is a second interpretation documented by the Oaxaca Tourism Secretariat. The state tourism assessment indicates that, in addition to “beach of the dead ,” there is a hypothesis that Zipolite means “place of the snails . ”

This second explanation is less well known among visitors, but it is important to understand that the etymology of a place name can retain different interpretations when the available historical and linguistic sources do not allow for a definitive translation.

Therefore, a note on the meaning of Zipolite should present "beach of the dead" as the most widespread interpretation , without stating that it is the only possible explanation.

Where does the name Zipolite come from?

The name Zipolite is associated with the Zapotec language and culture of the Oaxaca coast . The San Pedro Pochutla region is part of a territory with a deep indigenous presence, and many of its place names preserve the memory of the native languages.

In the case of Zipolite, the interpretation related to the dead connects the name directly to an ancient funerary tradition attributed to the Zapotec people of the area. However, the existence of a second hypothesis related to snails shows that the exact origin of the place name should be treated with caution.

Where is Zipolite?

Zipolite is located in the municipality of San Pedro Pochutla, Oaxaca , in the coastal region. The beach is approximately 3 kilometers from Puerto Ángel and is part of the so-called Oaxaca Coast Route , along with destinations such as Huatulco, Mazunte, Puerto Escondido, Zicatela, and the Chacahua Lagoons.

Its location made it one of the most recognized spots on the Oaxacan coast and a destination with a presence of both national and international visitors.

Why is Zipolite beach famous?

Besides its history and name, Zipolite is known for its nudist tradition . The Oaxaca government identifies it as Mexico's only official nudist beach and notes that since 2016 it has established itself as a national and international benchmark for naturist tourism.

The beach is also part of the tourist offerings of the Oaxaca coast and is known for its relaxed atmosphere, its waves, and its connection to water-based activities. The state Tourism Secretariat includes it in the Oaxaca Coast Route.

Thus, the name traditionally associated with death contrasts with the contemporary image of Zipolite as a tourist destination related to freedom, nature and life by the sea .

The meaning of Zipolite and the history of the beach

The case of Zipolite shows how a toponym can preserve part of the memory of a territory.

“Beach of the Dead” refers to a funerary tradition attributed to the ancient Zapotec inhabitants, while the interpretation of “place of the snails” points to another possible relationship between the name and the natural environment.

Over time, that beach linked to death transformed into one of the most unique tourist destinations in Oaxaca.

Today, Zipolite is part of a region recognized for its beaches, biodiversity and culture, but its name keeps alive a fragment of the history of the Oaxacan Coast.

In short: what does Zipolite mean?

Zipolite traditionally means “beach of the dead ,” a Zapotec interpretation related to the tradition of bringing the deceased to this place for burial. However, the Oaxaca government also records a second hypothesis: “place of the snails . ”

Therefore, the most accurate explanation is to point out that "beach of the dead" is the most widespread meaning, but not the only documented interpretation .

The name thus connects the indigenous history of the Oaxaca Coast with a destination that is currently known for its beaches, strong waves, and unique tourist tradition.
