A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Mexico City, July 7, 2024 On the afternoon of Saturday, July 6, 2024, around 4:00 p.m., fans of the reggae music movement gathered to say goodbye to Pimentel Gerardo, who was a workshop leader, radio producer and founder of "Voces del Oriente"  at Faro de Oriente , where he collaborated for around 20 years.

Gerardo Pimentel, affectionately known as “Zopi” , sadly passed away on April 8, 2024, during the solar eclipse. His time on earth was unique and prominent in Mexican reggae. Beyond his musical contributions, he was also known for being an incredible human being who helped many young people during his time at Faro de Oriente.

The “Reggae Pal Oriente” event turned out to be a happy, enjoyable, emotional, dancing atmosphere full of reggae and ska music . The tribute to “Zopi” also featured the presence of Los de Abajo, Ganja, La Comuna and Selecter Joshua, groups that used to be friends and acquaintances of Gerardo Pimentel.

According to the Ministry of Culture, the event was attended by more than 10,000 people, who danced and sang with great emotion the songs that “Zopi” performed in each concert presented with Los Rastrillos.

During the Rastrillos' recital, songs such as “ La música”, “Colores”, “Plegarias”, “Zipolite”, “Luces” and “Reggae Man”, among others, were performed with great sensitivity. The event lasted approximately 6 and a half hours.

Beyond his musical talent, Zopi was admired for his charisma, stage presence and ability to connect with audiences on a deep level. His performances, besides being concerts, turned out to be shared experiences, where listeners were transported in an environment full of contagious energy and positive vibes emanating from the stage.
