A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .
Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before. Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.ivan

A BEACH UNLIKE ANY OTHER:Freedom. A term that means many things to many people. How close can YOU get to that feeling? If being able to be naked on the entire beach (only one hotel exception we've found so far) is a piece of your dream freedom, and you are looking for it in Mexico, this is the ONLY place you'll find that. And, if smoking cannabis being OK in all establishments (again, with ONE exception...) is a part of your freedom dream, then again, this is the only place where that is a reality, in the entire Mexican country. I've never found anything like it in the U.S. nor in Europe. My partner and I aren't nudists ("People who engage in the the practice of being naked wherever possible"). We do, however, believe in wearing or not wearing whatever we want is essential to OUR definition of freedom. The option of total nudity allows for less sexism and body shaming. Less oppression ... more freedom! :) Still here? So, it looks like you may be interested in this 1-mile long beach filled with hippies, Mexicans on vacation, some ex - pats, and tons of Europeans taking their holidays in this exceptional part of the world. Stick around. We'll tell you more. Questions? Make sure you contact us on our Contact page! Maybe we know the answer. |

These are some activities you can do in Zipolite in times of Covid-19
Zipolite is the nudist paradise of Oaxaca , where you can enjoy the sea and sand without taboo. Here foreign and national tourists lie down to sunbathe without clothes, as it is the only official nudist beach in Mexico.
We share a guide of unmissable activities that you can do in this destination, because not everything is being naked on the beach.
Surf lessons

Zipolite is one of Oaxaca's favorite beaches for surfing. Its waves are ideal for those who like strong emotions. If you are a beginner in this sport, on the beach you will find classes that can be all day long at a cost of approximately 400 pesos, with board rental included.
Shambhala meditation
This beach also offers its visitors an environment of tranquility, perfect for mindfulness and eliminating the stress caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. In a small place called Shambhala, people have spiritual encounters, through meditation and yoga practice in an environment that allows contact with nature.
This ceremonial center, located on the top of a Zipolite hill, organizes activities with healers and experts in emotional healing.

Visit nearby beaches
If your stay is several days in Zipolite, you can take a small tour to see the neighboring beaches, such as Mazunte. There you can visit the Mexican Turtle Center, if you are lucky you can help with the release of some specimens of this species. Or you can also visit La Boquilla, an intimate beach where you can snorkel or kayak.
Sanitary measures in Zipolite
Although the beaches of the municipality of Pochutla, where Zipolite belongs, will be open to the public, it is important that you know that the sanitary measures against Covid-19 must be monitored at all times , such as the use of face masks, since three brigades of three teams from the municipality will be visiting both this tourist destination and Puerto Ángel.
Hotel occupancy must be 50%, restaurants 40%, while bars and canteens will only have take away service.
According to Diego Ordoñez Ventura, coordinator of supervisors for Health of the municipality, the campaigns that were already carried out in the center of Pochutla and businesses will now be carried out on the most visited beaches, especially from March 29 to April 3, which corresponds to Easter.
“I invite you, a tourist friend, that if you go to our municipality you take the corresponding sanitary measures (...) We ask you to support us and not to disrespect us. Support us, we are going to mitigate the pandemic ”.

Pochutla.— Of all the beach destinations in the Oaxaca Coast region, Mazunte, located in Santa María Tonameca, is the only one with a police presence, this at the request of the municipal authority, so the few bathers observe walking by the small beach to the elements of the state police loading their rifles.
The uniformed men are attentive to disturbances, to verify that safe distance measures are followed and to react to an incident at sea, which translates into confidence for visitors, who do not exceed 40% of influx.
Mazunte, like the rest of the beaches, has an alert flag due to the strong waves that have reached up to four meters in height, which puts people's safety at risk. Perhaps because of this situation, few visitors have come to this beach recognized by the Mexican Turtle Center and its work.
For this reason and because long before the coronavirus health crisis arrived, there were already official limitations in Mazunte.
It seeks to lessen the effects of tourism on the local population, something that has now become a necessity, due to the risk that coronavirus infections will spill over in the Oaxacan town.
The other face
In Zipolite, on the contrary, the police are not present neither to monitor nor to assist tourists. This beach is the only one where tourism is officially allowed. There is only one group of three volunteer lifeguards, led by El Tijuana, a young surfer who came to his best friend's wedding on the beach three years ago and has stayed in the area ever since.
But El Tijuana and El Pochu, another of the lifeguards, carry out this work out of vocation: they do not receive support for what they do, neither money nor food. They only support themselves with the rental of surfboards.
Tijuana affirms that until before the pandemic, each year the presence of tourists was increasing in this nudist destination.
"It is fashionable," he assures, but that is not why they are officially named as a rescue group. On the contrary, they are the ones who manage to support themselves, to the extent that the equipment they own was given to them by altruistic people.
The increase in people has also led to more accidents being recorded at this site, formerly known as La playa de los muertos.
So far this Easter there have been two drowning episodes, one died, an American, the other they managed to save. Another person died in January, after Zipolite had had a white balance for two years.
Although here the visitors do not exceed 40% of influx, the few people who occupy the beach insist on challenging the raging waves, despite the warnings of the authorities.
