A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Zipolite is a small town in the Pacific Coast in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, located 3 km from the town of Puerto Angel and incorporated to the municipality of San Pedro Pochutla. It is located 230 kilometers from the city of Oaxaca City, capital of the state
Acquired the name of population in 1970, because until then only resided in the area some families scattered throughout the area. It's the most famous nude beach of Mexico. Has a population of approximately 1000 people, even if this figure is higher due to tourism both internally and externally.
Zipolite is spread over several colony that are mangoes, lover's beach, sea view, Col. Center, Las Palmas and white rock in this last reside most of the foreign tourists. This area is full of services for the tourist and set for young people.
The other colonies also have services for tourists but mostly it is inhabited by people of the community.
Within the community there are two points of contact between the residents and visitors and are the cobbled street in the colony rocablanca that this always in constant movement with its restaurants, shops and inns. But the park in zipolite is the area of the community where they perform various activities prosecuted to the coexistence of the families of this population.
The Beach, just like the people, it's called "zipolite", There are many different versions about the origin of the name and the stronger is that in zapoteco means "Beach of the dead". The name is due to the legend that says the zapotecs here to bury their dead, bringing them from tens and even hundreds of miles away. There are other studies even non-certified means that says that of caracoles¨. the sand of the beach is fine and white, describing a crescent along its entire length. The Surf is of type medium to strong in all the times of the year, with the surf and underwater currents very strong in the rainy season.
In its 2,5 km long, the beach has palapas, bars, restaurants, hotels and all kinds of services for the tourist.
To be found in the area of the tropics, the climate is fairly constant, maintaining a temperature between 25 and 35 degrees all year round. Falls within the areas at risk of hurricanes. ONLY HAS 2 Seasons: rainy season from June to October, and the dry season which runs from October to June.

MEXICO CITY (AP) - The United States Embassy in Mexico has warned its citizens about travel to Oaxaca, a southern state convulsed by protests in recent weeks.
The message was issued after eight people were killed in a weekend clash between protesters and police in Nochixtlan. The embassy tells government employees they may only travel by air to the beach resort towns of Huatulco and Puerto Escondido.
That excludes the state’s scenic capital, also named Oaxaca, popular among tourists who flock to its rich culinary and craft offerings.
Foreign tourists were scarce in the capital this week. Hotels complained of cancelled bookings, sidewalk cafes that grace the city’s central square were empty.

Members of a radical teachers’ union have taken over the square and closed many of the state’s highways to commercial traffic.
