A groundswell alert has been issued in 23 municipalities in Oaxaca as Civil Protection officials warn of waves up to four meters in height.
Protocols have been activated in which municipal authorities, security forces and rescue agencies engage in monitoring efforts to avoid material damage and injury or loss of life, said the state’s Civil Protection chief Felipe Reyna.
The Pacific groundswell, known as “mar de fondo” in Spanish, is expected to be seen this weekend from Chiapas in the south to Baja California Sur and the southern part of Sinaloa with waves of two to three meters.
It is forecast to continue through Tuesday.
Heavy rains are also in the forecast, affecting San Luis Potosí, Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas.
Three deaths were recorded when a groundswell delivered huge waves to the Pacific coast at the beginning of the month.
