Just got back from a trip to my local surf spot. I don't think anyone will be surfing  Bay Head anytime soon, certainly not me. I'm a little old for 15-foot waves - not that I was ever young enough.

I have to say these could be as big as any waves I've seen outside Hawaii, and I've seen a lot of places outside Hawaii. Of course in some of those places, such as Puerto Escondido, Mexico, the waves are actually clean and surfable. This is just a giant mess.

At the moment all of the sand has been stripped from the beaches and the rock sea wall is exposed. Waves are topping that wall already. and we've got hours to go till the storm peaks.

In that spirit, enjoy these photos. It's fun to watch such a natural phenomenon in action - though not so much fun to deal with it by trying to keep the house watertight.

 I'll start with the highlight of the storm so far: The lobsters. The guys at Shore Lobster on Channel Drive in Point Pleasant Beach were having a pre-hurricane sale yesterday. I got four lobsters and three humongous crabcakes for just $22. Below is a picture of our dinner guests last night:

Para nosotros, señaló el presidente de San Pedro Pochutla Enrique Enzaldo Martínez, como autoridades municipales que exista gente con ese entusiasmo, que es característico a la juventud, que promocionen lugares turísticamente hablando sin duda es un gusto que promociones el Carnaval Zipolite 2012, que es uno de los centros turísticos más importantes de mi Municipio y más atractivos de todo Oaxaca.

El objetivo es tener en estos cinco días gente de todo el mundo, que conozcan Zipolite, Puerto Ángel, que tiene una de las bahías más bonitas.

El periodo de gestión del presidente está por concluir, pero por dos años se tuvo en los trabajos de planeación de este Carnaval que por fin verá la luz, el próximo 1º de noviembre, creo que los grandes proyectos tardan en concretarse, y afortunadamente se llegó todo a buen termino, por eso del 1º al 5 vamos a vivir una verdadera fiesta en Pochutla, Zipolite y Puerto Ángel.

La diversidad de actividades van desde la muestra gastronómica hasta el voleibol de playa, juegos pirotécnicos todo esto y más disfrutaremos del Carnaval, donde la alegría permeará, el mal humor está prohibido. 

No tengo la menor dudad que esto va ser un éxito, ya que lo que se ofrece diversión a todos, ya que se armó un buen operativo de seguridad en donde participan los tres niveles de gobierno”, finalizó Enrique Enzaldo Martínez

For us, said the president of San Pedro Pochutla Enzaldo Enrique Martinez, as municipal authorities that there are people with that enthusiasm, which is characteristic of youth, which promote touristically speaking places is definitely a taste Zipolite promotions Carnival 2012, which is one of the most important tourist centers of my municipality and attractive throughout Oaxaca.

The goal is to have people in these five days around the world, who know Zipolite, Puerto Angel, which has one of the most beautiful bays.

The term of office of the president is ending, but for two years it was in the work of planning this Carnival finally see the light, on 1 November, I believe that large projects are slow to materialize, and fortunately it was all to fruition, so from 1 to 5 are going to live a real party in Pochutla, Zipolite and Puerto Angel.

The diversity of activities ranging from dining to shows beach volleyball, fireworks and enjoy all this Carnival, where joy permeate, moodiness is prohibited.

Organisers and authorities presented this first Carnaval where Reactive seeks tourism in Zipolite

A fusion of music, art and sport live for five days in the Costa Chica of Oaxaca

From 1 to 5 November will be after the first Carnival Zipolite where merged culture, music, art and sport will be exhibitions dining, beauty of the choice of bikini girl, among other attractions, where highlight the joy, harmony and friendliness of the Oaxacan coast.

The executive producer of Carnival Yurik Rubio, who was accompanied by the municipal authorities of the City of San Pedro Pochutla, reported to be reckoned with rock concerts and electronics, theater, folk groups, gastronomic, floats, photo exhibition, dance , crowning of the queen and princesses and shows directed to the public.

Jose Antonio Perez Camacho, coordinator of the League Huaxyácal confirmed conducting tournaments fut Baby Child, soccer and volleyball as well as the Girl Bikini Contest where they expect also a great environment, with free entries as in all Zipolite summoned in their tournaments over several years.

For Carnival Zipolite already have confirmed the participation of bands recognized as Inglourious Crocodiles, Sexy Cumbia, The Rake, Ellipses, Small Musical, plus state groups. Different Carnival sponsors have sought to provide the facilities that come personar thousand this month starting this beach made famous in the '70s as the only nudist in Mexico, but do not want to pigeonhole and expect it to be this Carnival the trigger for it to have an influx of more than 50 thousand people in those five days at sea and sand.

Organizadores y autoridades presentaron este primer Carnaval en donde se pretende reactiva el turismo en Zipolite

Una fusión de la música, el arte y el deporte se vivirán durante cinco días en las Costa Chica de Oaxaca

Del 1º al cinco de noviembre se llevará al cabo el primer Carnaval de Zipolite en donde se fusionarán la cultura, la música, el arte y el deporte  habrá exposiciones gastronómicas, la belleza de la elección de la chica bikini, entre otros atractivos, en donde resaltará la alegría, armonía y trato amistoso de la Costa Oaxaqueña.

El productor ejecutivo del Carnaval Yurik Rubio, quien estuvo en compañía de las autoridades municipales del Ayuntamiento de San Pedro Pochutla, informaron que se contará con conciertos de música rock y electrónica, teatro, grupos folklóricos, muestras gastronómicas, carros alegóricos, muestra fotográfica, danza, coronación de la reyna y princesas así como espectáculos dirigidos a todo el público.

José Antonio Pérez Camacho, coordinador de la Liga Huaxyácac, confirmó la realización de los torneos de Baby fut infantil, futbol y voleibol playero así como el Certamen de la Chica Bikini en donde se espera también un extraordinario ambiente, siendo las inscripciones gratuitas como en todos sus torneos convocados en Zipolite a lo largo de varios años.

Para el Carnaval Zipolite ya se tienen confirmados la participación de bandas reconocidas como Malditos Cocodrilos, Sexy Cumbia, Los Rastrillo, Elipses, Pequeños Musical, además de grupos estatales. Los distintos sponsors de Carnaval han buscado dar las facilidades para que miles de personar acudan este inicio de mes a esta playa que se hizo famosa en los años 70 por ser la única nudista en México, pero no se quieren encasillar y este Carnaval esperan que sea el detonante para que se tenga una afluencia de más de 50mil personas en esos cinco días de mar y arena.

En esta primera edición se buscar reactivar el turismo y economía de la zona. “Lo haremos en noviembre, para que turistas visiten las costas de Oaxaca y con este Carnaval seguir con la oferta turística de la zona, como hace unas semanas en las Fiestas de Puerto Ángel 2012, el Surf de Zicatela y el Festival de Jazz en Mazunte, entro otras actividades”, destacó el Agente Muncipal de Zipolite Pedro Ruiz Pacheco.

Like a burlesque combination of Halloween, a funeral and Mardi Gras, Day of the Dead in Mexico is an experience that should be on anybody's 'what to do before you die' list (or after, for that matter).

The customs of Day of the Dead are a mix of both pagan and Catholic beliefs. The origins date back into the time of the Aztecs when a month-long celebration was held in honour of Mictecacihuatl, queen of the Netherworld. After the Spanish conquest and introduction of Catholicism, the dates and length of the festivities changed to coincide with the Catholic holidays of All Saint's Day on Nov. 1 and All Soul's Day on the 2nd.

In Oaxaca, the whispers of the dead start to be heard weeks before the actual holiday. Audacious skeletons and skulls of all shapes and sizes peek and gawk around every corner. Whether they are made out of candy, clay, papier maché or wood, Mexican 'calaveras' have just as much personality as their flesh-and-blood counterparts and are known worldwide for their gaudy humoristic style. The calaveras are made in a variety of scenarios to reflect the hobbies and passions of the defunct. Intricately made tiny smiling skeletons are fishing, taking photos, getting married, dancing and painting. There are doctors, mariachis, bakers and even some mermaids and prostitutes. The most famous of all is La Catrina (The Elegant Skull). Originally a 1910 etching print by Jose Guadalupe Posada, she has since become the most iconic image of Day of the Dead and has had songs, poems, paintings and sculptures dedicated to her.

In the last week of October, it is common to come across Diablos roaming the streets, cracking their whips and bullying the crowds, as part of a comparsa or procession. They usually come accompanied with beautifully dressed Catrinas, ghosts and giant papier maché dolls that dance down the cobbled streets and throw candy. Throngs of people follow the parade of demons until a mass group of revellers accumulate in the zocalo (main square), where shots of mescal (like Tequila) are handed out and brass bands play upbeat melodies.

In preparation for the visitors from the underworld, the markets overflow with flowers, food and decorations. Orange, yellow and deep crimson Marigolds (known in Mexico as the flowers of death) lay in huge bundles waiting to be taken to the cemeteries to adorn grave sites and altars. The smell of freshly made mole negro and chocolate mix with the salty tang of fried and chillied grasshoppers known as chapulines. Sugar skulls, tamarind candy and pineapple tamales will be offered to spirits with a sweet tooth. Tissue paper cut-outs or papel picado hang in colourful ghoulish scenes. They are used to decorate the city as a gesture to make the un-living feel welcome.

Tombs are turned into altars in the cemeteries or panteones. They are meticulously decorated with flower petals, a special bread (pan de muer-to: bread of the dead), and all of the food, drink, possessions and vices that the loved one who has passed on enjoyed the most. It is believed that these things will coax the spirits into passing over and joining in on the festivities.

On the eve of Nov. 1, relatives and loved ones of the tiniest of spirits gather in the various cemeteries and homes of Oaxaca, awaiting the arrival of the angelitos. The souls of the children are believed to leave around the same time as they arrived the next day, cueing the appearance of the adult spirits. This is when the party really starts.

Twelve-piece bands with dented tubas and ancient accordions belt out riotous tunes. Mourners and celebrators dance around gravestones and drink hot chocolate laced heavily with mescal. In the dark cemetery, lit only by a sea of candles, the mix of emotion is overwhelming. Joy and grief mingle in the air, pulling the crowd back and forth like a wave. Many of the merrymakers are dressed in costumes so elaborate that it puts Halloween to shame. In the chaotic, mescal filled night of Dia de los Muertos, you may well wonder who is from the land of the living and who is from the Inframundo.

Despite its name, this holiday is much more about life than death. It is a time to celebrate the cycle of life and to invite the dearly departed in on the party. It is a beautifully boisterous and morbid celebration that reminds us that we all die and that life is to be lived to the fullest in the meantime.

? There are several panteons to go to in Oaxaca. The most festive and attended ones are: Xoxocotlan and Santa Maria Atzompa on the 31st.

San Miguel (Panteón General) on Nov. 1 for both day and night.

There are also altar competitions and other events that go on in this main cemetery.

San Felipe del Agua: Nov. 2. There are also parades and processions that seem to pop out of nowhere in the zocalo and around town. Also consider checking out some of the surrounding pueblos for their own Day of the Dead festivities.
