A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .
Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before. Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.ivan

Mexican archaeologists discover the burial of a high-ranking Zapotec individual
Inside the third grave, bones were found along with an offering. Photo: DMC.INAH. MAURICIO MARAT. Translated by: Cristina Perez-Ayala OAXACA.-
The burial of a high ranked individual of the ancient zapotecan society, accompanied by an offering, was discovered by archaeologists of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH – Conaculta), on the third tomb of the Aztompa Archaeological Zone in Oaxaca.
After the three-month old finding of a hitherto unheard of funerary complex which is composed of three funerary chambers, investigators were finally able to enter the third prehispanic sepulcher where, among other objects, they found a red vase with a human face estimated to date back to between 650 – 850 d. C.
This mortuary chamber is different from the earlier two which had been emptied and cancelled since it still held the remains and its offerings in excellent state, informed Nelly Robles García, national coordinator of Archaeology at INAH.
This chamber is estimated to be the eldest in the funerary building. It was carefully filled with combined layers of rocks and earth, in the purpose of conserving its contents as best as possible.
Osseous remains of a high ranked individual of the ancient zapotecan society – possibly of the male sex – were found inside the third chamber. Small and plain bones such as vertebras, ribs and hand bones were found along with the sternum, the pelvis and the cranium.
The osseous material will be examined with physical anthropology studies with the purpose of determining pathologies, age, nutrition, state of health and whether it has intentional deformities for cultural purposes.
Along the said remains, archaeologists found a fragmented skull, which belonged to another individual, most likely placed as an offering, with a small black jar and parts of an earthenware pot.
Deep within the third chamber an anthropomorphic clay urn, whose character is ornamented with earflaps and a headdress, the latter of which was found to the side of the piece underneath a sandstone, said archaeologist Eduardo García.
The piece belonged to the mortuary offerings of a male adult, he added.
The urn is more than 1,100 years old and about 50 cm (19.69 inches) tall. and about 30 cm (11.81 inches) in diameter.
Adding the headdress, the urn measures up to approximately 70 cm (27.56 inches) tall.
The character represented is assumed to be in a sitting position, although this will be confirmed as the excavation advances.
The red pigment with which it was painted is one of the more distinctive characteristics of the piece.
The painting can be fairly appreciated by its degree of conservation.
This pigment might have been obtained from cinnabar or from the hematit

Similarly to Alba, this house is hidden on the east side of the hillock among the trees. Of a completely open structure, it looks onto Mazunte´s main beach. From anywhere within the cabin there are impressive views of the bay and the sea, from which direction the breeze blows. Despite this, the cabin is invisible from the beach. It has a hanging double bed, an ample hammock space and a private bathroom. (It is equipped with a safe, wireless Internet, hammock and fan).

The tomb of a high-ranking member of Zapotec society was found at a 1,200-year-old funerary complex in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, the National Anthropology and History Institute, or INAH, said.
The funerary complex, which has three burial chambers, was found about three months ago at the Atzompa archaeological zone, the INAH said.
Archaeologists managed to get into the third pre-Columbian burial chamber, which contained human remains that are likely those of a male, INAH archaeology coordinator Nelly Robles Garcia said.
The remains will be analyzed to determine the age, nutrition and health of the individual, as well as whether there are intentional deformities of a cultural nature.
Archaeologists found a fractured skull belonging to another individual next to the remains, leading them to conclude that it may have been an offering.
A small, black tubular pitcher and pieces of a vessel were also found in the burial chamber.
A red urn with a human face on it and other items were found in the grave, archaeologist Eduardo Garcia said.
The vessel, which is estimated to date back to 650 A.D. to 850 A.D., is 50 centimeters (1.6 feet) tall, archaeologists said.
"We are dealing with a building where the remains of people with a very high status were placed. Who they were and what role they played in Zapotec society is still to be determined based on the findings that are being made and their later analysis," Robles said.
Archaeologists found the building, which was designed exclusively as a burial site, in late April.
The tombs are located one on top of the other and, unlike previous discoveries, are not underground.
One of the burial chambers is decorated with a mural of a ball game, a theme not found before in Zapotec funerary practices.
Atzompa was a small satellite city of Monte Alban, the main center of the Zapotec state that dominated what today is Oaxaca.
"This discovery changes the perception we had in the sense that it was not as similar to Monte Alban as had been thought but, instead, developed its own architectural expressions, such as in the case of tombs and palaces," Robles said.
