BIRDWATCHING (SUNRISE AND SUNSET LAGOON TOURS)

For all nature lovers, especially those interested in birds, the Manialtepec lagoon is a magical place to visit. It’s surrounded by mangroves where large number of birds both residents and migratory, nest. On our tour, well see roseate spoonbills, northern jacanas, ibis, herons, parrots and parakeets, among others. You’ll also see a rich variety of vegetation on the shores of the lagoons and in its canals. Well observe the fisherman catching shrimp and lagoon fish.  At the end of the lagoon, we enter the Manialtepec river passing through beautiful aquatic flowers and plants, and we will see the connection where the lagoon the river and the ocean coverage. Either in the morning sunrise tour or the sunset lagoon tour we will be able to watch many kind of birds. Don’t forget your bathing suit and camera.

We decided to take a minibus from Oaxaca to Puerto Escondido. If you do the same be prepared for an adveture…

On the way, first and only stop… I can’t believe we survived this ride… 7h of rollercoaster is too much even for me… it’s hard to describe but imagine narrow, mountain road (where 2 cars can bearly pass each other) going up and down the mountain, no air conditioning or ventilation in the old smelly minibus (while it’s boiling hot outside) and a crazy driver who sits on the other cars back bumperall the time, I loved it for the first half and was sick the other half… well made it finnally… and when we did even those waiting to sell us stuff knew better than to try it.

There is also alternative route coach and it takes highways rather than small mountain roads. So you can try it. We flew back from Puerto Escondido (splendid, beautiful airport) to Mexico City so this is another route to take.

We wanted to go to Acapulco when we planned this trip but in the end decided against concrete hotels next to the beach and someone recommended us Puerto Escondido. It’s one of the most important tourist attractions on the Oaxacan coast. It caters to a more downscale and eclectic clientele than neighboring Huatulco, mostly surfers, backpackers and Mexican families. West from the town is a large lagoon area popular for fishing and birdwatching.

We loved our hostel having a room with ocean view. It was called Hotel and Youth Hostal Mayflower (Andador Libertad, Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido 71980, Mexico). We could also see a night market in the street below. I think only here we got ourselves nice suveniers. Acctually I bought Maya Calendar earlier in Teotihuacan. I think I bargained it to an extent when the woman was unhappy about the price. I don’t think it’s ecologic attitude and I guess now I believe that both parties should feel happy about the price. When you can’t afford not to sell but at the same time price gives you no margin it just seems so unfair.

There are many small and mid-sized hotels and restaurants around and a few upscale hotels to choose from. Most cuisine is based on seafood and local plants, which include eleven species of banana, chocolate and coffee. In one of those restaurants I ordered Enchiladas chili con carne. I didn’t speak Spanish much but after the time we spend in Mexico I was able to make decisions from the menu lol before ordering I spoke to the waiter and made sure that enchiladas where with beef and tomato chili sauce. What did I get… well dry chicken and black bean sauce hahahaha so yes, at the sea don’t be stupid like me and order sea food! Anyway when the waiter after the meal asked if I would like to go out in the evening to a disco I refused straight away I was so disappointed with the food. My thinking went along the lines “How dares he! Serves me this instead of what I wanted even though I’d made sure it was with beef and tomatos and than asks me to go out!” silly, silly girl I sometimes am.

The beach is lovely and it’s famous among the surfers because of the waves. The sunsets are stunning. You can take a walk along the Andador Escéncico (Scenic Walkway) which is a set of paths, stairs and bridges that begin at the main beach of the town and wind their way over rocky oceanside cliffs, passing below the lighthouse to a lookout the named Sueño Posible (Possible Dream). In some places the walkway is very near the ocean and gets wet from the waves.

We tried surfing, not really on surfing boards but on body boards. I managed to catch the wave only once but it was enough. Going with the flow gets a totally different meaning. No wonder surfers have something of a hippi style of life. You don’t want to loose what you feel in the water after getting out of it.

The pelican are like gulls you can see them everywhere around. Summing it up if you don’t like crowds of people, fancy hotels and do like surfing Puerto is for you :)

P.S. You might wonder what happened to the drugs… well i’ve never seen any drugs in Puerto Escondido, only after some time when I told somebody about my trip there I got to know it’s famous for drugs. So maybe it is. Be sure if you don’t want to find them you won’t. unless things change which they do lol

Trip to Huatulco – little bit of Mexican art … Alebrijes

When I arrived at my hotel room I was delighted to find a gift from the hotel and thought I would share it with you and a bit of the history of these mysterious ornaments.

The card with the ornament had this explanation …

These allegories of animals were invented by Pedro Linares Lopez from Oaxaca (pron. Wa-ha-ka), while he was 30, and very sick.  While unconscious, he dreamed of a strange and different place where all the animals had turned into odd, unknown creatures.  He saw a donkey with butterfly wings, a rooster an an eagle head and many others.  When Pedro got better, he began to mold and paint the figures as he had seen them in his dream.  Pedro Linares Lopez died on January 26, 1992 at age 86.  His family continued the tradition.

I’m not quite sure what to call my winged creature – it was a great souvenir to cherish from my trip to Huatulco.  Hope you enjoyed this little cultural insight … more on my trip to follow …

Once a year, a small group of yogis travels down to Zipolite, Oaxaca for a week long yoga retreat. Our teacher was lucky enough to find the amazing bungalows at Loma Linda the second year and we've been going back ever since.


La Loma Linda is set into the hillside, directly across from Zipolite beach. You truly have the best of everything- breathtaking views of the ocean and town, gentle breezes cooling down the heat of the afternoons, and easy access to the beach- just go down the bougainvillea-covered stairway (with an amazing view all the while!) and cross the small street, and there it is- the wide open beach! To your left, a lovely lady sells ice cold, fresh young coconuts. (Watching an elderly woman machete the top off your coconut and then delicately place a flower on top is something else.) A walk down the beach leads to plenty of restaurants and cafes, and the center of town is within walking distance if you want to grocery shop, have a drink or go salsa dancing. 


In harmony with nature, the bungalows themselves feel like part of the landscape. Each is unique and extremely well made- no gaps in windows and doors when closed, no janky craftsmanship, and no cut corners. If you're out for the day and leave doors and windows closed, it's still cool and bug free when you return. Everything is tidy and smells clean, from the linens to the towels! The beds are comfy, the mosquito nets are effective, and the fans keep you cool if you need to adjust to a tropical climate. Each bungalow is different, and has its own character... all of them are colorful, artistic and wonderful, with small creative details you'll notice if you look carefully. Dieter and Katia get the best hammocks- they are comfortable and you can lounge in them for hours.


I have stayed in a few different bungalows over the years (and seen many others of friends staying) and all of them have been great! My favorite is Casita, which has beautiful flowering plants, a front porch/balcony area with hammocks and a table and chairs, all looking out to sea. The kitchen is great if you like to make your own food. A hat tip to mod cons, there are fridges in every room, and wifi if you want it. Each bungalow feels private, and has a different lovely view.


Keep in mind, they are bungalows- that is, it's not a hotel, so think palm thatched roofs and (beautiful!) wood and adobe construction. Designed with the help of a master architect, they are the most solid, well built bungalows I have ever seen. As far as bungalows go, I don't think you'll find better than this- if you've never stayed in bungalows, this is a great place to try it. The yoga studio and the main house, where the hosts live, is pretty amazing. 


Yes, it's a bit rustic- I prefer "natural" ;) There isn't hot water in the outdoor showers, but with the climate, the fresh, cool water is really all you need. You wont want hot. Depending on which bungalow you stay in, there may be a flush toilet or there may be an ecological compost toilet. I've stayed in bungalows with both and the design is such that you don't really notice much of a difference- in other words, the eco compost toilets are actually really nice, well made toilets- there is even a separate porcelain urinal for dudes. No odor and no funk, and the bathrooms are super cute in design. It's a natural setting, so yeah, there are bugs around- but usually outside your bungalow, and not in. Do the obvious in a tropical climate: bring bug spray, and close the doors at dusk.


The grounds are vibrant and colorful, cared for lovingly by unfailingly helpful hosts Dieter and Katia. The yoga studio is clean, lovely, and well supplied. They use sustainable practices, and each year we've returned has seen more and more improvement. The yoga center is an active part of the community, and the kids have a dance class in studio once a week- really cute. Each year, the place just gets better and better. 


We've been up and down the beach over the years, and tried a lot of the cafes and restaurants with no problems and lots of success. There are a couple small hotels in the area that have AC and TVs and stuff like that, but the natural beauty, amazing location, and homey feel of Loma Linda can't be beat... if you're in the area, try to stay a few nights here and enjoy these very special, quintessential Zipolite beach bungalows.
