A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

Puerto Escondido is a traditional Mexican fishing village located 280 km south of the city of Oaxaca and 110 km west of Huatulco Bay in an area known as the Emerald Coast for its magnificent jade-green waters. Puerto Escondido offers all the commodities of a splendid tourist destination enriched with traditional Oaxacan coast culture.The diverse beaches in Puerto Escondido are one of its major attractions, varying in types of sand, waves and rocky slopes. Playa Principal, is one of the calm beaches in the city, offering kiosks and changing rooms; while Marineros is ideal for novice surfers and Zicatela, considered one of the top 10 surfing locations in the world.
Other popular beaches include Barra de Colotepec, a turtle zone; Bacocho, an open beach with gentle waves ideal for diving; Playa Embarcadero, suitable for skiing and sailing; and Carrizalillo, a bay area perfect for swimming and boat trips. Puerto Angelito, a small bay next to Puerto Escondido, is another great place to visit. Its natural pool, with transparent waters, is ideal for recreational swimming.
The nightlife will satisfy anyone dedicated to late nights and good music. For dining suggestions you will find a smorgasbord of sidewalk cafes, tableclothed restaurants and rustic palapas on the beach.
Puerto Escondido is also renowned for its Turtle Assistance Ecological Camp, located a few miles from the port, and The Living Museum of Sea Turtles, The museum is designed to protect sea turtles and prevent extinction and displays a variety of sea turtles that inhabit Mexico’s shores. Shopping is another diversion in Puerto Escondido. Local merchandise includes everything from leather ware, cotton/woolen textiles, tinwork and ceramics to stone work, jewelry and the black pottery typical of Oaxaca State.

Spanish. English widely spoken in most areas. 
Currency and exchange used in Puerto Escondido
The Mexican Peso is the local currency, although Canadian dollars are recommended. Most hotels have a money exchange office on site. US dollars can be exchanged in banks only. Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted credit cards. ATM's are not easy to find and the Cirrus system is not compatible everywhere.
