A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

“Enchanting little place”
5 of 5 starsReviewed October 31, 2011
This place is a relic in brand-saturated Mexican beach tourism. The hotel is beautifully adorned with arabesque mosaics and cute murals. The room was very spacious and all details were thought of, you could tell. The place was very clean and all set. Paul was very entertaining in conversation and had many interesting stories to tell. Definitely not a miss!

“An oasis for the curious mind (with the right dose of hedonism)”
5 of 5 starsReviewed October 7, 2011
Posada Tabachín boasts pretty much everything people look for in a hotel: the spectacular sea views from the terrace and some rooms, peace and quiet, the delightful traditional breakfasts (the best in the area, and I'm Mexican), the very clean, comfortable rooms individually furnished in impeccably good taste (they are such an oasis after you're back from a beach adventure), the one-of-a-kind murals in the common areas... However, once you stay there, the importance of these normally sought after features of travel accommodation fade in importance, overshadowed by the experience Paul has achieved.

Part of it has to be the deeply stimulating intellectual discussions. I still will never forget how, my first time there, his friend was showing us an original page of a Gutemberg bible. His keen understanding of topics from medieval kings to contemporary Mexican political figures, from outstanding lecturers at Ivy Leagues to Mexican 1920s movies, in so many disciplines. But, unlike the owners of other B&B/small hotels I've stayed at, he is never overwhelming or boring. He knows how to respect the personal space of his guests, and those who are sadly not interested in talking to him won't even realise he's there. Overall, even if my work takes me to hotels costing 5 times as much, I'd much rather be here.

If you put it all together, you are left with something that resembles not so much a home as a small London-style private club transplanted on to a tropical paradise: a unique place with very comfortable accommodations, very interesting conversation, and a feeling of relaxation the moment you walk in. (Of course, it happens to be at least 30°C, have far nicer food, and cost considerably less.) For me, it is a destination.

(After rereading this: no, I was not paid to write this...)
Room Tip: Upstairs rooms are more expensive but larger (some are proper flats) and have nicer views

“Tabachin, the absolute best in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca”
5 of 5 starsReviewed September 27, 2011
I was fortunate enough to stay at the Tabachin again. I have moved down here for work and spent a few nights in the " blue room penthouse" before moving into my apartment. I already miss it and wish I could have stayed forever.

The quality and cleanliness of the rooms is superb and the breakfasts!!! Try the oriental tofu stirfry or the enchiladas banderas! Breakfast timeis a real treat. You can chat with Paul, an absolutely charming person, other people passing through and the locals. Yes, the locals! The breakfasts are so good that people who live here stop in to relish something from the very ample menu.

Speaking of the locals, I've been here long enough to learn that the Tabachin is held in very high regard by both natives and transplants alike. Paul's reputation for quality is spotless and he is much loved by the people here. As we all know, if you want to know what a place is really like ask the locals. I'll see you there for breakfast!!

I just came back from my trip in Oaxaca. I visited different places in Oaxaca, but my stayed at Tabachin studios in Puerto Escondido made my trip even better. Love the style, location and their staff. Very clean place. The owner Mr. Paul is a great person. Very friendly, and honest, also great guy to have a conversation with (bilingual ;)). I will highly recomend this place. Also great food. Nothing to complain about... :)
