A little about Playa Zipolite, The Beach of the Dead . . .

Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico, on the Pacific Ocean. A little bit about my favorite little get-away on this small world of ours.

Zipolite, a sweaty 30-minute walk west from Puerto Angel, brings you to Playa Zipolite and another world. The feeling here is 1970's - Led Zep, Marley, and scruffy gringos.

A long, long time ago, Zipolite beach was usually visited by the Zapotecans...who made it a magical place. They came to visit Zipolite to meditate, or just to rest.

Recently, this beach has begun to receive day-trippers from Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, giving it a more TOURISTY feel than before.

Most people come here for the novelty of the nude beach, yoga, turtles, seafood, surf, meditation, vegetarians, discos, party, to get burnt by the sun, or to see how long they can stretch their skinny budget.

I post WWW Oaxaca, Mexico, Zipolite and areas nearby information. Also general budget, backpacker, surfer, off the beaten path, Mexico and beyond, information.

REMEMBER: Everyone is welcome at Zipolite.

Puerto Escondido Oaxacan Coast

Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico

Lagoon in Puerto Escondido Beach

fishing in Puerto Escondido BeachPuerto Escondido was founded as a fishing village and a port for shipping coffee beans. The first coffee farms were founded in the 1870’s, in the area around el Cerro de Pluma, “Feather Mountain”, in the Zapotec hill country above and beyond Pochutla, which is why the coffee is called Oaxaca "Pluma". By the 1930’s, coffee had become central to the economy of the indigenous Chatino communities perched high above the coast in the Southern Sierra Madre.

Puerto Escondido remains a traditional Mexico fishing village in the State of Oaxaca on the southern Mexico Pacific coast. Puerto Escondido itself did not exist as a odern town until the 1920's, when the owners of the great coffee farms in the foothills decided that the protected bay of this lovely little town made an ideal and convenient port for shippinng coffee and other products of the region. Learn more about the local coffee plantations in the Oaxacan cloud forest above Puerto Escondido.
Puerto is home to a surfing competition with world-class surfers participating. And P.E. also hosts a marlin fishing tournament every November, if you are a fisherperson or want to become one, this is the place for you.

For The Birds: The fastest growing hobby in the U.S. and Europe these days is bird watching. Not really surprising, as we baby boomers slow down some. The great biodiversity of the Oaxacan Coast is just one of its many attractions, and it's a motherlode for birders.
The river-fed mangrove lagoons are typical topography of the of the Oaxacan coast. a meeting of fresh water and the sea, this wetland environment harbors an astonishing variety of birds, as well as fish, flora, reptiles and mammals. You can experience it as close as the extensive wetlands of Manialtepec and Chacahua systems.

Below are some of Puerto Escondido's best bets, also something for everyone, and we'll be adding to this list regularly!
